Azriel was born an orphan. His earliest memory was stumbling through the endless desert scrub, the merciless sun scorching under all that black fur.

____It was comfortably dark, the sort of night that wrapped you up like a warm blanket in its serenity. A balmy breeze lightly ruffled Azriel’s fur as he laid down beneath a kaleidoscope of stars, on a ledge overlooking the canyon. Celtic had joined him, and so they had curled up together, watching the distant stars wink leisurely down at them. It was quiet except for the welcome sound of the wind weaving through the ravine. They’d finally found their home. No, not in each other, but in the vast network of mesa tunnels that spiralled out behind them. In the large open rooms that they could see dragonets playing in, and in the dragons smiling down at them. In the luminescent moss and vivid lakes deep underground. In the sunlight that peppered the tunnels during the day and in the moonlight that graced them by night.

____There was no doubt that there was work to be done. Some places were falling apart, others yet to be dug out properly and expanded, dragons that needed to be kept safe and healthy. There were issues that needed to be sorted out like water and food storage. But not right now. Azriel twined his fluffy tail with Celtic’s. Right now, all that mattered was this moment. Stars scattered like forgotten embers, across an unrelenting sky, woven into the fabric of movement and life, an insistent reminder that he was here, he was here, and he was alive, an insignificant speck in a chaotic world that had found love and purpose. Home. He was home.

Lost and lonely, he’s the only
The one that had yet been stricken by the sun
Gazing by the dark, the stars yet so stark.
Alone, not family or glory,
He’s alone and poor, he
Took upon the land and visited the sand

The kaleidoscope, a small place of hope,
Found alone yet death had not known
Together at night, stars yet to freight.

They slept together, death to do them part
And as real as Azriel, yet he would feel,

He was not alone.
