Despite being Mayor of Square Toe, Roslin was never actually elected. She was the old Mayor's assistant and took over after he died. No one complained. No one else wanted the job. As it turns out, mayor-ing consists of a surprisingly large amount of paperwork and a surprisingly small amount of telling people what to do. Most of Roslin's time is taken up with administrative work, with breaks to mediate the occasional dispute that can't be solved by Stella giving the participants a good thump and an admonition to play nice. Roslin also has the dubious honor of moderating the town meetings, where most of the real decisions for the town get made. Anyone can attend, anyone can speak, and as long as they're an adult and reasonably sober, anyone can vote. These are held once a month and tend to last either ten minutes or turn into an all-day debate. Getting everyone to stay civil and leave happy is tough, thankless job, but someone has to do it. It's lucky for everyone that she does it so well. Mayor is still an elected position, but no one else has run in years. Looks like Roslin will be in charge for a while longer. |

Phyllis is Roslin's assistant and protege, responsible for making coffee, collecting mail, welcoming new residents, alphabetizing files, and all the random little tasks that need to be done that Roslin can't make time for. She's been secretly thinking about running in the next election. |

Sherman is Roslin's older, nerdier brother. Every so often, Phyllis will arrive with a stack of documents (town meeting minutes, trade records, old weather reports) Roslin wants digitized. He makes jokes that he didn't know he was his sister's secretary, but does it without complaining. Paper degrades even in an arid climate and he was the one who complained once too often about how hard it was to find old clan records. |

As the clan's water management specialist, Spike works more closely with Roslin than anyone else, with the possible exception of Phyllis. It's serious business after all; when even a little slip can have severe consequences you better well get a second set of eyes to double check. |
