Claws clicked softly on cold stone, any echo they may have caused muffled by the cool damp that had settled over the cave and the pitter-patter of rain outside. Raindrops broke with messy, wet splashes over branches and rock, washing the small things hiding beneath the muck and decaying leaves. He imagined the worms and other crawlies relished in the drowning.

Purple wings were tucked protectively under their elytra, and slim shoulders hunched to ward off the growing chill. Hurrying deeper into the cave, he breathed in sharply, each breath piercing. Every exhale warming his muzzle only momentarily before the sting of the encroaching winter dispersed it.

He used to hate winter. The warmth and brief reprieve from the cold only lasting a mere moment before giving way to even more bitter chills than the last. A cold that keeps you on your toes and awake through the night. Fall asleep in the arms of the Icewarden, and you’re not likely to realize the next dawn or any after.

Down the winding paths, he stuck left as the small cave began to branch. With each turn, the noise of the rain outside grew more muffled, and each inhale a little less visible. The long mane that had tackily clung to his body, caught by sweat and frost, began to fall more loosely around his small form.

To those unfamiliar with the grooves in the floor, the soft curve of the walls, this cave was a maze. A collection of tight tunnels, each fork arriving at three more, each turn resulting in an entirely different end from the next.

He knew them well. Within them, he’d grown to welcome the long winter nights.

Another turn, and he’s greeted by the soft jingle of bells. Warm light cascades down his back, and he shivers as the warmth envelopes him. Inside the hollow, Euanthe waits for him. Clockworks, small jewels, bits of amber, and soft fabrics frame her on all sides. Her delicate body is curled tightly around three small eggs. They sparkle like gemstones through the gaps in her mane and arms, and she welcomes him with a mesmerizing hum and the flutter of shimmering wings.

His heart swells. He quickly navigates the hoard within their small lair and soon pushes himself up against her, his nose pressed up underneath her chin, long tail curling protectively over the eggs within her grasp. He trills, and her laughter is like music.

“Micah says our storage is good through the solstice. Have you anything?”

“No,” He replies, content beside her. “It’s razed. Astrea foretells a safe hatching, but spring will be hectic.”

“Doubtless.” Euanthe’s gaze settles softly on her clutch. Yes, it’d be a busy spring, in more ways than one.
