I got this feeling that we're dead ...

______ Ronan wakes up.

He’s back in the right after again (it’s not right, time doesn’t work that way, this is wrong wrong wrong) and blinking up at daylight with overwhelmed eyes, claws working deep into the loose black soil under his palms to convince himself it’s real.

“My gods,” says a voice somewhere beyond his sundazzled vision, “you lived after all.”

That’s right, Ronan vaguely remembers. His head. Or - what was left of it, after the blow landed.

“You’ve been out a long time, friend.”

Ronan wants to ask how long, but suddenly he can’t quite remember how to send the signal from his brain to his nerves to his muscles, can’t quite dredge up any knowledge of the feeling of dirt beneath his hands or breath in his lungs, and when the panic sets in it feels like water closing above his head and -

Ronan wakes up.

“Morning,” says Dayna with a private smile that says she’d been watching him sleep. She’s haloed in the sunrise and she’s excruciatingly beautiful, breathing life into the remains of last night’s fire for breakfast, and it’s not like he hasn’t noticed her before, but still.

“Doesn’t look like rain today,” Dayna’s saying. “We should cover more ground than we did yesterday, barring any ugly surprises, yeah? … Ronan?”

“I’ve been here before,” he says, and feels like he’s floating, or drowning, or dying. The sun didn’t rise over the horizon it should have, and the sky is the wrong color, and -

Ronan wakes up, for real this time.

Dayna again, rustling the sheets as she rises, eyes dull and glassy. Often her sleepwalking will lead her to the same destination; he’s found her staring sightlessly up at the stained glass roof of Moonkeep’s Great Hall more times than he can count. She just sits on the edge of the mattress this time, barely moving in the dark.

“Ronan?” she says in her sleep.

“Yeah,” he answers, because it seems rude not to, even if the version of him she’s addressing is her subconscious one.

“Ronan,” she whispers. “Wake up. Wake up, Ronan. Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake -”

Ronan wakes up.

Except he doesn’t, because he was awake, and Dayna’s hand snaps out instinctively to grip his bicep as he lurches back from the table, a puppet on a string, gasping like a drowning man breaching the surface of the ocean. The bench clatters away and she follows him to her knees on the stone floor of the Great Hall, making a right spectacle of them both amid the pleasant mealtime.

Is this real?” Ronan gasps, breath shallow and fast, and he’s forgetting how to breathe, of course he is, he hasn’t filled his lungs since the day his skull was obliterated. “I have to wake up, I can’t remember the last time, I’m not, this isn’t real -”

And Dayna holds his face between her hands there on the floor in front of all of Moonkeep, whispering over him, “You’re awake, Ronan, I swear, I’m real, I promise you’re here and I’m here and you’re awake, okay? It’s okay Ronan, you’re awake -”

Ronan wakes up.

Character notes:
- Ronan suffered massive head trauma in a battle that should, by all rights, have killed him. He may have lived, but his grip on reality is touch and go; on his bad days he can't distinguish dream from reality and he struggles daily to comprehend how he possibly could have survived his head wound. Even on his relatively good days he can't shake the feeling that he didn't survive it at all.
- He has particularly vivid dreams, which only exacerbate his tenuous grip on reality. Occasionally he falls into wormholes where he dreams repeatedly of waking up (see above) and the aftermaths of these instances are always messy for days, sometimes weeks
- Ronan is a phenomenal medic, both on the battlefield and off, and a deft surgeon - particularly under pressure. Ironically, he is a sub-par psychiatrist at best
- Hopelessly in love with Dayna, with whom he traveled extensively before their temporary separation and respective traumatic experiences. They were not mates before Moonkeep, but the Fort proves a fitting atmosphere for them to try to piece themselves and each other back together in

He is in the high council.
