Harlan may very well be the oldest dragon in Square Toe; at the very least, he's been around as long as the other residents can remember and it's not as though anyone else is stepping up to claim the title. At first impression, he seems humorless, gruff, and stiff-backed stubborn.

And as first impressions go, those are pretty accurate.

Despite his age, he shows no sign of slowing down and the old soldier is in fact the co-leader of the clan's so-called militia. Square Toe hasn't had real enemies in centuries (and it may not have ever had; records are spotty at best about the good ol' days), and most bandits restrict themselves to trade caravans and each other. The militia consists of himself, his co-commander Lorna, his son Mazurowski, and anyone else he can trick, threaten, or cajole into joining an exercise or drill, with the notable exception of Stella. Even though she should be obvious choice for any kind of clan-defensive effort, she steadfastly refuses to get involved.

Harlan has plenty of kids, but is only on speaking terms with one of them, something which he truly regrets.

Another old fighting fogey, Lorna has been Harlan's friend for decades and is willing to indulge him beyond the point where she really should. She's more self aware than he is and realizes this isn't actually doing anything to protect the town- she just likes an excuse to get her armor out and do some training.

Though he doesn't quite measure up to his dad's hulking silhouette, Mazurowski cuts a big, intimidating figure, perfect for soldiering. Too bad he doesn't actually want to do it- he only sticks around from reluctance to tell his dad no, plus the little guilty thread of I can't leave too; if I do he'll have no family left.
