The earliest memory Tovald has was of the Icewarden, his frosted gaze hovering over him with interest and a certain stoicism that sent both tremors of cold and warmth through the young Guardians' heart.
The Icewarden never spoke, only watched, quiet and cold. Behind him, Tovald could see movement of other dragons. All of which were furry, their wings small. They watched and waited, staring him down, before one approached.
The dragon's name was Aithenwal Hayle, or so he told young Tovald.
And he was the one who gave Tovald his name.
"Your name is Tovald, young Guardian," his voice had echoed, resounding in the hatchling's head. "Welcome to Sornieth."
Tovald was young, back then.
He knew little to nothing, and yet... when the Gaoler did speak those words, his chest warmed and his heart squeezed as he was gifted the name he would hold onto dearly.

Aithenwal was the one to guide him beyond the confines of the icy fortress that the Icewarden called home.
But, to Tovald's surprise, he did not return to the fortress when the Guardian found himself on the border of the Fortress of Ends.
Instead, the Gaoler continued with him, guiding him through the snowy landscapes of the Cloudscrape Crags.
They moved at a slow pace, days and nights passing, the Gaoler showing the young Guardian how to survive on his own; how to hunt for meat in the snow, how to catch bugs that hid beneath the frosted rocks, how to forage for flora in the frigid temperatures, and how to thrive in the icy waters of the ocean that surrounded them.
Tovald was always in awe with how the Gaoler confidently strode through the snow, the thick, frosty blanket clinging to his fur but never weighing him down.
He admired the strength and the power that the dragon revealed to him, and felt honored that he was to travel with this Gaoler.
And then the day came when they reached the edges of the Frozen Floes.
It was on those floes, that the Gaoler departed Tovald.
Tovald was a young dragon, but he was also an adult. He was strong and well-built, his wings powerful enough to send snow flying when he landed on the ground.
But he had grown used to the Gaoler's presence, and as he looked out onto the Floes, he turned to his mentor, asking where they would go when they reached the end of the Icewarden's land.
The Gaoler's gaze met his, and he stepped away from the young Guardian, his words echoing in Tovald's mind.
"Seek what you desire," Aithenwal had said, his tone echoing against the shards of ice that surrounded them. "When the ice no longer wails and the winds no longer howl, your meaning will come to the light."
Tovald was full of questions at the words that Aithenwal breathed, but before any of them could leave his maw, the Gaoler continued to speak.
"This is where we part ways," he rumbled. "Farewell."
And then he left, disappearing into the snow they had come from.
Tovald went to follow, before something stopped.
A deep tugging in his heart that pulled him towards the Frigid Floes.
It was a feeling he had never once experienced in his time with Aithenwal, but he recognized it almost immediately, as he turned towards the sun as it set over the floes that bobbed in the ocean;

Longing.

icemidsmall2.png

Despite the pain in his heart over Aithenwal leaving him along the floes, Tovald continued onward. He wandered among the bobbing ice for many moons, days passing within a blink of an eye.
And yet Tovald took little notice, instead following the tug in his heart that pulled him to whatever lied on the other end.
The ice would cry and creak beneath his weight, and the winds would batter him during the day, and chill him during the night.
Still he kept on, surviving and even thriving in the harsh territory he was in.
And yet, as the days turned to weeks, and the weeks turned to months, Tovald began to question what it was that was pulling him.
So far, he had found nothing among the frozen floes that he resided in.
Instead, it was just him and the prey he hunted down.
Defeat and discourage was starting to weigh on him, and for the first time ever, he pondered taking to the skies and leaving the Southern Icefield behind.
After all; he had no where to go. No place he called home here, and no dragon who he considered family or friend. The other dragons he had met were through Aithenwal, which was rare, and now Aithenwal was gone...
The pull in his heart only made him more confused.
Why did he feel this longing?
Was it simply a desire to explore as Aithenwal showed him?
Or perhaps there truly was something there that he needed to find?
Tovald knew not what it was, but finally he had made his decision.
To him, there was nothing here for him any longer.
So, spreading his wings wide, he takes off into the sky, soaring over the floes.
And yet, as he does, he spots something in the distance—something he did not expect;
A lone Tundra dragon, resting on a small floe, her eyes focusing down into the water below.
Caught off guard by the strange sight of another dragon, Tovald misses an updraft, his wings fumbling in the air, and begins to crash towards the ground, the bobbing ice parting so that the water could engulf him.
Thrashing beneath the waves, he struggles to swim forward, but his wings were too awkward in the water, especially since he was used to them being closed when he swam, and the cold was beginning to seep into his scales already.
As the air squeezed from his lungs, he saw a shadow looking over him at the edge of the water, and suddenly a body plunges into the water, and he comes face to face with the Tundra dragon he had seen before.
The Tundra grabbed onto his back and propels the both of them to the surface, and Tovald lands on the ice with a grunt and a gasp for air.
"Are you alright?" Were the first words he heard the Tundra speak, and something in Tovald stopped as he turned to her.
For the first time since he had watched Aithenwal leave him, he felt that feeling once again; the longing in his chest.
But it was stronger now, and as he studies the Tundra further, he couldn't help but notice that he could no longer hear the ice beneath his claws, nor could he hear the winds howling over them.
He could only hear her.
"I'm fine," he replied, once he saw the curious look she was giving him. "Thank you... For your help."
And for answering my questions...
The Tundra introduced herself as Shavira, and Tovald only became more and more conscious of the tugging in his heart.
It's her. She's this feeling.
Instead of parting ways, Tovald stayed with her for the rest of the day, the two dragons fishing and talking and sharing stories of their lives.
And then he learned of her desire; the desire to create a Clan; a place where dragons could congregate and become family.
Once he knew of it, only one thought echoed in his mind;
No matter what, I'll make that dream come true.

Tovald is a gentle Guardian dragon that is deeply in love with his Clan. He met his familiar, Erine, nearly frozen in the snow, and took in the Hippalectryon and cared for it as he would his children. Now, he and Erine are inseparable, and you'll often find Erine floating around and helping Tovald oversee the duties of trainers and the skills of trainees.
He tests the trainees and is in charge of transfers between trainees and trainers, and works closely with trainers to schedule Coliseum runs and how the distribution of training is upheld.

To this day, he still looks back on his time with Aithenwal, and loves it dearly, and feels quite honored to be apart of a large Clan named after the gentle Gaoler that had shown him how to survive.

He and Shavira still raise hatchlings today, and they're still far too in love with their work and their Clan to hibernate, but when that day comes, he'll happily be able to accept that he helped his beloved Shavira make her dream come true.
