Biography
red/pinkish hair. He is a good guy, always looking out for others, as far as his expression I would like to see him pretty happy. He is sort of a mage/healer, though he does know how to use a sword because he grew up less fortunate -than say Aspen who you just drew lol- and had to learn how to fight to keep thieves away.
Valentine the Valiant
A Short Story by Kailumi:
12345As a hatchling, Valentine was raised to become the next guardian of the heart of arcane. Arcane is one of the eleven elements in Sornieth, each element worships their own deity. Deep inside the territory of each element lies a shrine dedicated to their deity. Within each shrine lies a crystal made of pure elemental energy that the dragons call hearts. These hearts are gifts from their deities that protect the lands it surrounds. That is until about twenty years ago, when rebel plague dragons raided the shrines and attempted to turn the world red. The elemental hearts suffered minor injuries, resulting in the loss of many dragons. Those that survived were forced to mutate, or evolve, into plague hybrids. As the strongest arcane dragon left, Valentine's father, Elsi was nominated to be the protector of the arcane heart.
12345Before the Red Mission, there was never a need for a guardian because the shine locations were unknown to outsiders. Without hesitation, Elsi agreed to be the guardian, knowing the risks he would be taking. He only had one request, a few others to assist him. As time went on the role became more ceremonial, but that did not bother him. One day while on patrol he met a charming dragon named Ama. They ended up nesting and had two hatchlings together, Valentine and Syrup. As the first born they knew it was going to be Valentine's duty to become the next guardian. From a very young age he was training with Starfall Isle's best fighters and learning about the history of their faction, Prism Moon.
12345The counsel declared that Valentine would take over guardianship for his eighth Starfall Celebration. An event that brought everyone within Starfall Isle to the shrine in Star Wood Strand to honor the Arcanist. An inspirational spot full of tall blue trees, pink crystals, and flower l. Little remained of the raid that occurred decades ago; most of the plague was removed before it spread too harshly. Not long ago, Valentine came of age to take over guardianship.
Valentine would soon make the flight of passage as his new role of arcane guardian. It was almost time for the Starfall Celebration, a time to honor the Arcanist. Despite being trained since he was young, Valentine was really nervous because he had to stand in the shadow of his father until he proved himself worthy.
12345I can’t believe I am finally taking over my father’s duties in protecting the heart. Ever since I was a hatchling I imagined this day, but it was not going quite as expected. I had hoped to be surrounded by family and friends however only my mother stood by my side. A sweet scent lingered in the air, she was definitely cooking me my favorite stew for lunch. It made my stomach grumble.
Speaking of my mother, she peeped through the archway of my grotto, asking “Are you ready to make your flight, Valentine?” Her wings were spread wide, as if she was just coming back from a flight. She made Valentine look tiny, as he was currently in human skin. He was by no means small as a human, but he preferred to be in his dragon skin. To be in another form was a sign of weakness – The smaller something is, the easier it was to kill.
I nodded. “I think so. I am a bit nervous, especially knowing they are throwing a whole celebration for me. You know I don’t like crowds. Plus there is so much to do before I leave,” I sighed while picking up my sketchbook.
“You have time; the Starfall Celebration won’t start until you arrive. Plus I am here to help, I have some time before the stew is ready.” She said while beginning to draw a small ritual circle with her claw.
“Yeah, but it wouldn’t look good to show up late.” I looked down at her circle and noticed she was struggling to write the runes. “Let me help you with that!” I then grabbed a long stick that was leaning against the grotto entrance. Carefully I drew out the archaic symbols. Each rune was decorated with intricate designs which made drawing them up a tedious process.
When I finished drawing the ritual circle, we began chanting ritual words that allowed dragonskin to become human skin. The circle flickered purples and pink sparks into the sky, a sight like none other. Each word they said gave the circle life, allowing magic to pulse through the runes. The ancient dragons bore this spell because others were often frightened by dragons. So they created their human-like skins to make them feel more comfortable in their presence. To return to their dragonskin, the circle would have to be destroyed. When they finished, she shrunk into her human skin, and the once glowing runes returned to a dirt brown color.
We packed until there was nothing left in what was once my whole world. Everything was stacked outside the cave entrance in crates for easy transportation. The moon lit the sky, it was an hour before midnight. Below diurnal creatures slept peacefully, I wished I could go out during the day. However it just was not practical, humans were too afraid of us.
Mom put the last box in the crate, “I guess this is everything.”
“Yeah, I guess it is,” I said while tying the crates together.
“The stew should be ready now,” she said while gesturing to the kitchen, “Are you hungry?”
“For your stew? Always.” I grinned.
We hastily devoured the lunch, packing made us really tired. We did not talk much, there was a mutual understanding between us that if one of us said the wrong thing we might end up shedding tears before I parted. My anxiety was acting up because I had never left the comfort of my grotto. Part of me knew this was always going to happen, but I knew leaving meant letting go of my youth and I was scared of that. I just had to keep reassuring myself that everything would be fine.
Stomach full of hot stew I made my way back to the crates. The crates were far too large for me to carry in weak human-skin, so I went back to my transformation circle and began wiping it away. A chill went through my body while my muscles flexed and shifted to their true form. Back in dragon skin, I grabbed the cargo with my claws and prepared to lift off. My wings began flapping and the wind thrusted into different directions. Lifting off was always scary, but the wind in my mane felt amazing. “I guess this is it.” I looked down with a sad smile.
“Stay safe my sweet Valentine!” Mom shouted from below.
In about an hour, he arrived at the crystal entrance of Harrell forest. A light elf named Sylvia sat on top of one of the crystal peaks. She was like his guide – she knew the forest better than anyone around. She immediately hopped down when she spotted Valentine coming in for a landing. “Hey there, I am Sylvia, your father’s assistant!” She greeted him with a warm smile
“Hello, is this Harrell Forest?” I asked half jokingly.
“Why yes it is,” she played along. “We must get going, the Starfall Celebration awaits!”
Along the way to the Arcanist’s shrine she gave me a short tour of the forest. Only one thing stood out: “Do not go into the mine.” She refused to explain what was down there, which only made me want to go into the mines more, but I could tell it was somewhat urgent. Trying to ignore it I nodded and promised I would not go into the mine. She informed me that she would become my assistant after the Starfall Celebration. The celebration was a week dedicated to the Arcane element that happened every year in the last week of September, it just so happened to fall on the same week guardianship would be transferred this year. My father, Elsi, was getting older and retirement was fast approaching, so he just decided to hand it over before he could not handle his job anymore. He purposefully chose today for it to line up with the Starfall Celebration.
Eventually, we arrived at the arcanist’s shrine where spirits of all kinds gathered to celebrate my arrival. Sylvia stood on a podium and announced that I would be taking over guardian duties. Everybody celebrated and cheered. My father stepped from out of the shadows and silenced everyone, he raised his glass high. “A toast to my son, Valentine.” The crowd cheered once again. Shocked by his presence I almost fell over. It had been so long since I had seen him, because he could not leave his post very often. This made conversation difficult because we did not really know each other. I tried to talk to him, but he was always engaging in conversation with another when I did. While I waited I was approached by many dragons asking for a dance, but I politely declined their offers. Eventually I tried to leave, but Sylvia caught my tail and insisted I stay until the crowd left.
Around dawn the crowd was beginning to disperse. Elsi led me to the grotto he had lived in while guarding the heart. He did not say much, he was clearly worn out from partying. I unpacked my necessities and tried to settle down. My thoughts were scattered left and right. I tried to sort them out, but I was too tired. The nest I laid in was not like the one I had back home, it was softer, and smelled like my father. I quickly fell asleep as the morning birds sang me to sleep.
When I woke up no one was around, I was used to waking up to the smell of my Mother’s cooking. My stomach roared, probably because there was not a lot of food at the celebration, and I did not catch anything before going to bed. I climbed out of the nest and noticed a note stuck on my paw. I tried flicking it off but it was sticking pretty good. Lifting my paw up to my head the note read “Meet me at the falls when you wake up. - Sylvia.” I thought about it for a bit, but decided I would go hunt first. I grabbed my bow and leaped out of the cave, I flew toward the forest Sylvia recommended hunting. Looking down I saw a herd of deer, there were three of them bathing in the sun. Carefully I slowed down my wings and tried to make a quiet landing. I quickly drew a ritual circle and transformed into my human skin, I drew my bow and aimed at the deer and missed. The arrow made the herd run off, I began running toward the direction where they scattered. Drawing the bow again I tried to shoot the biggest deer, but the deer ran into the mines and I lost the other two.
With no other choice, I followed the deer into the mine foolishly, I forgot about the promise I made to Sylvia. Hunger was all I could think about, my stomach growled so loud it echoed on the walls of the mine. I stood very still trying to listen for the deer, instead all I could hear was a faint sound of running water. It was really dark in the cave, my human eyes could not see what was inside. Using magic I summoned an orb of light to light up the mine, there was a strange smell lurking in the air. I decided to follow it, and it led me to a decorated vase. It had words written on it in gold, but it was the old language and I could not read it. Curious, I opened it up but it was only ashes inside. Is this what I was smelling? I inhaled and caught myself gasping for air, it smelled awful. I rapidly closed it, no longer interested in eating, I rushed out of the mine.
As I ran out the mine’s entrance a feeling of complete dread fell over me, the sky was turning red. Something was not right. In almost an instant Slyvia was by my side. “What did you do!” She demanded.
I hesitated, “I was hunting for breakfast and it ran in there, I was so hungry so I followed it in.”
Sylvia gave me a wicked glare, “You fool, you have awoken something very dangerou!”
“What?!” I shouted with disbelief, “By smelling a stinky vase?”
“Yes, didn’t your parents ever tell you how they locked up the plague leaders?”
I shrugged “I guess not, do you have time to explain to me?”
“Not really!” she exclaimed. “We have to go back in there and stop it, that feeling of evil is the elder dragon's will.”
Valentine followed Sylvia into the mine once again; he never thought he would mess up on his first day of the job. His heart pounded in his ears, but he knew running away would only make the situation worse. The elder plague dragon roared loudly. He had to stop it or he would be as good as dead.
“What are we going to do?” I asked, looking for reassurance.
“I don’t know!” Sylvia yelped, “I do not have enough power to stop it on my own. I should’ve called backup!”
All of the sudden an idea came to him, he remembered when he was younger and he practiced plague magic and arcane magic. There were tales of dragons who attempted to use both at once. It was hard, but not impossible. You had to have both mastered to dual wield. Valentine worked hard hoping one day he would be able to practice both at once. The question at hand was would he have enough time to finish the spell before the plague dragon dropped corrupt seeds into the soil.
Without thinking for another second he grabbed Sylvia, “I am going to attempt to dual wield plague and arcane magic. It may or may not work, but I have to try!”
“You’re crazy! I like it!” Sylvia nodded, “I’ll stand here and use my magic to shield you.”
I pushed my palms out in front of me while putting all my energy together. The plague dragon met my gaze and laughed, “You won’t stop me, many have tried, but none have succeeded!”
“You’ve been asleep for over 200 years, rotten one,” Sylvia hissed.
He fell back as if his body grew weak from its age, “No, I refuse to believe that. ”
Ignoring their banter I began manipulating the energy into a storm like none other, it twisted and turned, and made the plague dragon’s jaw drop. I felt the warmth of Sylvia’s magic protecting me, it filled me with confidence. I aimed it at the plague dragon with no remorse. It was either me or him. “Goodbye plaguebringer!” I shouted as my energy struck him in the shoulder. He wailed in pain before incinerating into nothingness. Sylvia ran over to where the plague elder once stood and quickly began cleaning the area of contamination.
“Did I really just do that?” I asked in shock.
Elsi emerged from the shadows, “Yes you did son, excellent work.”
“Thank you, Dad.”
