Biography

frequent customer - bookie - card dealer

Like most of the clan, Maude was looking for a new beginning in the Wind Flight, and it's not like she had anywhere better to go. While she's tight-lipped about her past, most of them seem to trust her.

...probably a lot more than they really should.

Maudesat's past is not a kind one. Born as the runt of the litter to a clan of Wildclaws meant that your strength meant your survival, and Maude was about as weak as a dragon could get. She didn't have much else to do but haul tail out of the den and try to make a living for herself without fighting. The early subliminal message that she was unfit for battle and therefore the clan was carried throughout her life; more on that later.

She did make a living for herself, by the way. Maude was a condragon, a gambler, a dealer of cards and holder of coins. "Luck-bringer" became the name she carried. Her old one just got tossed aside. Everywhere she went, it seemed that people flocked to her, always believing that today was the day they would make enough treasure, the day they'd hit the big one, the day they'd be so rich that the Icewarden himself would ask for a loan. But, aside from a knack for mental math and a large number of strategies, Maude understood something most never did: dragonkind is a species full of suckers. And she made a fortune and a half by making them believe that they weren't.

For every sucker, there's a tightwad. Sure, going into the Shifting Expanse wasn't necessarily the smartest idea, but she made a killing off of Stormcatcher's employees! Until the man himself found out that someone was making his workers spend their hard-earned money on card games. Maude was chased out of the Expanse with 10 Ridgebacks and a Guardian on her heels, and it was only through a lucky break that she was able to hide in the Ashfall waste...until some Coatls got all snippy about her "stealing" some precious metals that were just lying around. Bunch of jerks! She had to give away what she hadn't dropped in the Expanse to the clan and hightailed it to the Plateau, where she latched onto Deepdweller's clan and has yet to leave.

Maude has been trying her darndest to abandon her old conning ways for at least a little while. Unfortunately, pathological lying is a difficult habit to give up, and as such there's almost nobody in Wind Flight who knows anything legitimate about her. Maude is charismatic, and seems to come off like she's constantly selling something. Interactions with her often end with the other person walking away feeling oddly placated or oddly disgusted, depending on how smart they are. She demonstrates a startling lack of empathy at times, but she really is trying to be a better person. Really! She is!...hey, quit crossing your fingers!

Oh, her "strategic nonviolence". You could call it "being a massive coward", but that'd just be mean. Maude's initial reaction at the first sight of a fight - even seeing another WIldclaw, if they look scary enough. She has no instinct, desire, or even ability to fight. This doesn't end at getting physical - if you come towards her with a stern expression, or say that you need to talk to her alone, or something along those lines, Maude is gone. Her speed is something she lords over the Skydancers that frequent her latest Flight...mostly to annoy them into staying away and not using their "magical hoo-ha" on her. It works on Shiro, at least.

Her, err, business skills have landed her the position of the clan's bookkeeper, but if playing games with Vayu and entertaining the other hatchlings (and dragons!) of Wind Flight counts as another job, she'd be happy to get paid overtime.
