Biography

The flame that burns Twice as bright burns half as long.

Withermage.
Incredibly gifted at magic but touched by the shade. Die young. Often in some sort of magical explosion.
Despite what may be thought of a dragon touched by the shade, withermages are often a joy to be around. They experience more life in their short time than most do in a long one. They love deeply and hate deeper still.
Withermages thrive when surrounded by loved ones. An emotionally fulfilled, happy withermage lives a longer life than a bitter one.
Withermages tend to be created rather than born. The status is often self inflicted, with dragons turning to the shade out of desperation, often to save a loved one or in a futile attempt to undo the impossible. Dragons often mistakenly believe that the shade will grant them powerful magic. Instead it rapidly drains the existing magic of the dragon leaving it withered and frail.
Very rarely dragons can be affected while still in the egg. A terrible tragedy can allow slivers of the shade to nest deep within the forming hatchling. The life of a hatched withermage is often longer than that of a [uh...turned?] one. The dragon is often stronger and has better control growing up surrounded by that which will kill it.
The runes are to...hold back the shade fragments. Protection. More runes as the withermage ages and the shade's influence strengthens. More runes = more shade = closer to death.
Opal is patches of shade influenced magic breaking through. Opal = close to death.

Any eye colour. Any breed, but smaller and more delicate breeds are greatly susceptible. Fae, Skydancer, Nocturne, Spiral. An Imperial or Guardian withermage is a rare site indeed.
All dragons can be shade touched.

Colours:
Primary: Antique - Ice
Secondary: Antique - Ice
Tertiary: Denim - Phthalo OR Gloom - Midnight
Darker tertiary = stronger magic
Presence of the shade leaves them stripped of pigment and a sickly, pale colour.
The runes are a mixture of pure magic and drawn on with paint/dust/soot etc
Full withermage is xxy. Partial/weak withermage is xyz

One...enterprising...dragon has finely tuned a way to create hatched withermages. This often involves a sacrifice over the eggs. It's not pleasant. Nasty stuff. You don't want to hear about it.

Future varieties
Shade consumed:
Dark primary and secondary, white tertiary.
Dragons where the shade has all but assumed control. Is not expected to live much longer.

[Shade lite]
Any sort of light or pastel colours for primary and secondary. Dark tertiary.
Either dragons where the shade has failed to gain a foothold due to strength of character etc or the offspring of two withermages. Is expected to life a normal, perhaps slightly shorter, lifespan. These dragons have only the whisper of the shade about them.

[Elemental withermage]:
Slightly weaker withermages that were originally powerful mages of their own element. The original flight magic has created a shield around the shade's presence, tempering it's effects.
Light primary and secondary, any very dark tertiary. Tertiary must match eye colour. Nature = Hunter. Plague = Sanguine, Earth = Umber
