Personality
"To describe my personality... How does one even do it? I think my best trait is that I'm extremely critical. I try not to tear people down, but in my personal work, I'm very exacting. If there's a flaw, I won't be satisfied until I've corrected it. My other best trait is that I tend to be really calm, or at least, I act really calm. Even during my... failed mission, when I nearly died, when I came back to Sonrieth, the first thing everyone asked me was, 'How were you so calm?' I wasn't. I wasn't calm at all, really. I was terrified. You look out your window and everything is black--no stars, no planet at all--and you're petrified. But my sensor readouts were still accurate. I was in contact with ground control and my fellow cosmonaut, even if I couldn't see them. I told them I was aborting the mission and began descent. I didn't want to scream, or panic, or say anything stupid. There's no point to that... I guess that's... A good or bad trait, I'm not sure, but another one: I don't tell people anything unless it's absolutely necessary. No small talk, no BS, especially not during a mission. My feelings? Unless asked, they aren't relevant. Does that make me secretive? I don't know. But I really try to be honest; I'm just honest on a schedule."

Biography
Kuaizhou was touched by the shade while in orbit awaiting rendezvous with fellow Baikonur Clan cosmonaut Buran. She had to de-orbit her spacecraft early to escape, but she still ended up partially touched by the shade. After the incident, she was judged to be unfit for the cosmonaut program and barred from spaceflight until she had recovered.

But Kuaizhou, ever determined, was not done with the spaceflight industry. She realized more than anyone the urgency of ensuring that a spacecraft is shade-proof to ensure the safety of the cosmonauts, as well as, for unmanned satellites, the quality of their overall functioning. Her unique approach of the problem, by combining magical analysis of the pieces of the shade trapped inside her using the scientific method, proved to be revolutionary to the process.

These days, dragons in orbit have little to fear when it comes to the shade. But every dragon that goes to space owes part of their accomplishments to Kuaizhou, the grounded dragon who stayed on Earth to make the stars a little safer for everyone else.

Thoughts on the Shade
"The first thing people do when they hear I'm shade-touched is stand a little further than me. It doesn't matter that I'm almost entirely free of it; everyone gets a safe distance away from me. It's really kind of funny once you're used to it. The second thing they do is ask me questions about it, so I'm answering a few of them here.

"'How did you get rid of it?' Short answer: I didn't. Once you're shade touched, it's there for life. But it's possible to get it to a point where it doesn't affect you very much, which is what I did. The long answer is how I did that. I went to our clan doctor, Grissom, and he did what he could, but he ended up sending me off to a shaman in Light, who did what she could before sending me to Arcane, where a bunch of mages gave up and sent me to Shadow, who gave up and sent me to a bunch of Shade specialists on the opposite end of Arcane. They sent me to this tiny island which smelled oddly of fishsauce anywhere you went. But the doctors there were incredible. They basically taught me how to utilize my own magic to expel the Shade from me. It took almost three years of therapy, but those three years were productive years. Through hard work and determination, I got most of it out of me. What little is left is embedded in my tissue so completely that you would have to surgically remove a lot of me to get rid of it; it's a problem which Shadow dragons are susceptible to, unfortunately. But it's dormant, because it can't really move on its own. It gives me cramps and aches now and then, but that's it.

"'Did you think you were going to die?' I don't really remember what I thought, but that sounds about right. When the Shade becomes a part of you, it never really takes over your mind. It's a separate entity, and you and the Shade are basically two people trying to share one body. While the Shade makes its home in my head, its memories are stored pretty much entirely separately from mine. So if the Shade in you does something, there's a good chance you won't recall it unless there's pretty substantial evidence that you did it. Which means something like thoughts isn't that easy to recall. Now, of course I was there, but I wasn't really able to focus on much but getting myself back on the ground. I just didn't have room for extra thoughts, because all that room was taken up by the Shade. So no, I wasn't thinking, 'I'm gonna die,' I was thinking, 'I really gotta get out of here,' and it turns out, that works a lot better than worrying about something happening that you've been trained not to happen.

"'So if the Shade is dormant, why can't you return to space?' There's two big reasons. The first is that we flat out don't understand the Shade that well. If I go to somewhere that's shade-infested, no one honestly knows what will happen. About half of previously Shade-touched dragons that got over their infestation as I have found that they could resist the shade better than before; the other half are attacked by the shade with more ferocity than before and wind up re-infected. Personally, I don't want to test it. The second is that the long-lasting symptoms of being touched don't go away. Things like depression, dissociation, and insomnia are common even in patients that got over the more severe symptoms, like paranoia and psychosis (although strictly speaking, it's not the same thing as non-Shade psychosis, which is largely genetic. Scientists still don't know what causes psychosis in Shade victims.) Basically, even if I no longer have the shade in me, I'm medically unfit for spaceflight. But I'm still plenty capable; it just takes a lot more than that to be a cosmonaut.

"I hope this answered a few of your questions. And no, I don't do autographs. I really don't know why anyone would want one. All I really did was fail a mission and then prevent people from failing in that specific way again to the best of my ability. I'm just putting my education to use."
