HOTARU

Determined | Curious | Playful | Intuitive

Hotaru is one of the Suncircle's youngest Night Warriors, and while he was honored and thrilled to be placed in his ancestral clan, he never thought that his own training would amount to much. A clan with so many warriors already would have little need for an undersized Nocturne like himself, especially when his glowing runes made him poorly suited for stealth in the dark conditions favored by his family. He was not destined for anything particularly noteworthy or great, and that suited Hotaru just fine. The Suncircle would be as good a home as any - he could complete his training and fulfil his obligations to his family, but there were plenty of creature comforts and ways in which Hotaru could engage his more social, creative side.

But Hotaru's idyllic life was thrown into turmoil when the Suncircle received word that one of its contestants in the Sornieth World Tournament, Aten, had unexpectedly fallen in battle while protecting the team leader, Carina. In order for the team to continue fighting, their third teammate would need to be replaced - and Hotaru was the only Night Warrior available to send.

So Hotaru swallowed his fear, hoisted his family banner high, and set off to join his new teammates in the battlefield. His was a baptism by fire, and he relied on his speed and strong intuition to avoid and evade the much stronger enemies he faced while he honed his physical strength. Eventually, he was able to take the field as an equal to his teammates, Carina and Redhand. While his success as a fighter is still a surprise to him, Hotaru is pleased and proud of the unexpected path his life has taken and he has no regrets about serving his clan and carrying the Night Warrior name.

"This is it, everyone!" Carina yelled when they saw the immense, twisted form of the Undying Featherback emerge from the far gate. "Just like we practiced! Hotaru, take your defensive position!"

Hotaru complied without a second's hesitation, slipping into the protection offered by Redhand's much greater bulk and menacing shadow. He had nearly been knocked out of the tournament the last time they faced one of the Plagued boars. The Arena had been a knockout for him until that fight, literally - he was too small and fast for most of the bulky fighters to hit, and he was largely immune to the casters' spells. He'd gotten overconfident, and he'd forgotten that Undying Featherbacks were known to lash out with their diseased tusks whenever they were cornered. That mistake had nearly cost him his life.

After giving him a thorough dressing-down that Hotaru knew was borne out of fear, not anger, Carina had doused him liberally in potions and healing herbs and set about devising a new battle strategy for the next time they faced an Undying Featherback. Hotaru would take up a defensive position behind Redhand, whose frigid punches were even more effective against this particular breed of Featherback than the devastating force of his Eliminate, and Carina would give Hotaru extra protection by erecting a magical barrier around him, to absorb the force of those crippling tusks should one make it through Redhand's guard.

As the ward rippled to life around him, Redhand couldn't help but feel a tiny shiver of fear. His teammates were more experienced than him and were well equipped to take down the giant boar without his help, but he hated feeling useless and cowardly. Hopefully some Sprangryroos would come along after this fight so he could vent his feelings while making a valuable contribution.

Then the boar was on them, and Hotaru had to focus. Carina had taken to the air already, and was strafing the Featherback with Contuse bolts from above. Whenever the boar tried to swat her from the sky, Redhand ducked below its guard and hit it with a Frozen Slash.

Already, the boar was visibly weakening. But it had gotten in a few hits of its own. Carina was fine, but Redhand was hurt - not badly enough to warrant true alarm or a healing spell from Carina, but enough to make Hotaru worry. "Carina!" he called up to their leader. "Redhand is in trouble."

"I see!" Carina replied. "I'll get him on my next turn - I need to gather more breath before that thing goes for another Pestilent Slash."

But Hotaru was looking at the Undying Featherback, and something about the look in its piggy little eyes made the back of his neck prickle with unease. Something wasn't right. Without pausing to consult his leader, Hotaru reached into his tiny satchel and felt for the single Minor Health Potion that he still carried from his time as auxiliary support for his teammates, when healing injuries had been the best way he could serve. Carina would scold him for the waste, he was sure, but Hotaru's intuition was rarely wrong. He had to trust it.

After the brief respite, everything seemed to happen at once. Carina paused to gather breath; Redhand lunged in for a swipe to distract the Featherback from their leader. Hotaru lobbed his potion, which broke and showered over Redhand in a cascade of deep scarlet stars.

And then the Featherback reared up on its hind legs and dealt Redhand a blow that knocked the Imperial clean across the Arena. Redhand staggered to his feet briefly, then collapsed into the dust.

"Redhand - disth," Carina hissed; the furious expletive from their normally-composed leader made Hotaru's eyes widen in surprise. "Hotaru, cover me while I heal him! But steer clear of its claws!"

"Right - I've got it!" Hotaru charged into battle, still shielded by the bolstering ward but exhilaratingly vulnerable, and managed to hold off the giant pig until Carina returned to the fray. Together, they finished subduing the Undying Featherback before gathering around Redhand for a quick breather. After that fight, it was needed.

"Hotaru," Carina asked once they had caught their breath. "What made you decide to use that Minor Health Potion when you did?"

Hotaru shuffled, scuffing his tail uncertainly through the sawdust of the Arena floor. "I don't know? I just had a feeling that something wasn't right, and that I had to use it or bad things would happen. Are you mad at me?"

Carina shook her head. "Hotaru, I'm not angry. That impulse act of yours could quite possibly have saved Redhand's life, and it certainly saved our chances in this tournament. His injuries were so severe that without that potion you used, he wouldn't have lasted long enough for me to revive him with a healing spell. And aside from the fact that his life would have been in grave danger, there is simply no way that the two of us could have continued in this tournament alone. Redhand's Eliminate is too vital to our battle strategy. We would never have made it through the end of the day, much less the end of the round."

Hotaru's blood ran cold at the thought. "Then I did the right thing?"

"Without a doubt," Carina said, brushing the Nocturne with her wing in a rare affectionate gesture. "I pride myself on being a strategist, making sure we're prepared for everything. But some things are simply beyond predicting. You've got good instincts, Hotaru. Above all else, make sure that you continue to use them."
