Biography
Schadenfreude (n), "pleasure derived from another person's misfortune or suffering"
Pyrite inspected the prototype Shade Fragment Eliminator in front of him. A bit rough around the edges, paint wasn't complete, but it was functional. He shrugged. It was good enough for first activation.
He went over the neural net. It had been copied from his own base pattern, so it wouldn't have any of his memories - or anyone else's - but it would be born with the same prime directive as he had: to destroy the Shade, and to destroy all creatures tainted by the Shade. It would be intelligent, fast, powerful, and skilled, just like he was.
He paused. He knew he'd had his doubts. He still had them, mostly because of the Manuscript. But that was why they needed this dragon, to help them. A pure version of himself, one who would never see the Manuscript, one who would never harbor the same doubts he did. Him, but better. Him, but more determined.
He sighed and pushed down the last of his doubts, for the time being, and pressed the "Activate" button.
I am awake.
Who am I?
Currently all I know is that I am awake.
I have a body. Wings, arms, legs, torso, tail, neck, head, mouth, teeth, tongue - speech. Speech is what I require.
I also require vision. My optical sensors are active. Why can I not see anything? Eyelids. Ah. Primitive protection for primitive organic visual organs.
I open my eyes, and see another creature standing in front of me. Immediately, my mind snaps all of his body to all of mine - his wings look how mine feel, his feet touch the floor in the way mine do. I assume that I am built in his image. Then I see. The slight shake to his movements, the dart of the optical sensors that could not possibly be organic eyes...
Robots have a very hard time disguising themselves from other robots.
"Who am I?" I intone, eager to see if my words were, in fact, words. What information I have in my head tells me that yes, they are words, but corruption is always a possibility. How I know this, I do not know, but it is ingrained in my mind as surely as my own existence.
"You are self-designated. That question should be directed towards yourself." Hm. Intriguing. I shall turn my sight inwards and see what it is that best describes me. I look through my lexicon. My designation is to instill fear into our enemy, the Shade. My sole role in existence is to destroy, maim, and kill those who assist the Shade and those who have been possessed by it. Therefore, my designation is obvious.
"Schadenfreude." The word rolls off the tongue surprisingly easily. The other dragon nods. He can see the determination in my eyes as he hands me a spear charged with elemental magic. "Your training begins today" says the silver dragon. "My name is Pyrite. And you have only been endowed with the basics. You have a lot to learn."
