Biography

________S A T U R N__the seeker
Saturn saw dreams of shifting gold. Sand and ground that moved as water, the hissing rush of slopes that inched away from his firm footfalls. Even in the most desolate place, life was teeming. The sun made dances of the very air, wavering and shuddering as if made of precious water. Saturn knew there was much temptation to believe the illusory offerings given to him. But he knew better.

Saturn felt the spread of his toes upon the soft sand, felt its heat cling to the soles and curl around his ankles as he sunk into its plasticity. Each raised step creating cascades of gold fallen back to the ground, the playful wind smoothing over the prints left behind. Saturn had been left to wonder how other dragons could have possibly made their claim to such places. He was not a creature of heat and resource. He preferred the wet hold of the endless oceans, slithering serpentine and weightless among the crystalline purity of the underwater. He did not feel built for the heat, and he was quick to bless the setting sun for its mercy, pitching his tent nearby the cacti flourishing where he felt helpless.

Saturn had found it rather laughable that he should be building a fire in the desert. But the night brought forth a chill as gripping as the gnarled fingers of death itself. The winds had started to pick, whips of sharp sand scraping past Saturn’s face as he winced at its sudden hostility.

It was then he saw it. Something akin to ancient, towering and black beyond black, towering in the distance. Saturn had been sure to use care in rubbing his eyes, feeling his stinging vision focus upon the strange sight. He knew it could not have been a tree, for nothing grew to be so looming. Against his grounded reasoning, he had hauled up his tent from its buried safety and packed, ignoring the wailing howl of the desert wind as he ventured closer, determined to discover the strange object.

The wind grew unbearable. As Saturn’s body started to shift in the sand underneath him, he choked back a grunt as sand smashed against his face, smothering his nose as he coughed out in pain. He bowed his head to keep from being hit, but the wind followed. Rippling cold and burning with sand that scraped and sliced like shattered glass, Saturn’s body was a mere nothingness compared to its brutal warfare. In the midst of the assault against him, he had seen the visage of the towering thing. Seen it’s crystal appearance, how it shone in the moon like a grim omen. Saturn retched with pain, feeling the wind slam into his ribs as he toppled. His body pushed against the sand as he moved against his volition. No force could have held up against the wind, and Saturn had done his best to shield his face, biting back a cry, feeling his body lift in the storm. All he had left was time.

Saturn was unsure when he fainted. His body ached and he struggled to walk. He felt the reluctant shift of his muscles as he looked around, finding nothing in his sights that could even convey a vague memory. He walked, aimless, in a feeble attempt to return home.

It was not home he had found.

A city. A marketplace bursting with life. Dragons that flew from bored holes and clung to the vast edges of silk-laced banners. Stone artwork of deities and birds that screeched and fluttered by to escape teasing children. In the very middle sat a marketplace far larger than anything Saturn could have possibly seen. An endless array of stalls and life, teeming with chatter. Saturn’s body fell half buckle with relief, nose filling with scents of burning sweetness. As he walked, he had seen a divide. A crag, with worn bridges that swayed with each prod of the soothing wind. Bathing in shade and crawling with swarms of dragons fending off intruders from their holes, the stone looked alive and festering.

“Scary, ain’t it?”

The voice had caught Saturn off guard, his body twisting to spot the source. He was met with a pretty smile and the flick of a tail. A woman in a hat and cloak, rugged and handsome. She offered Saturn a curled lip and a chuckle, sharp teeth glinting in the beams of sun trickling down to bathe the market.

The way his eyes shone had told her what she needed to know of him. Names did not matter, and she beamed, tail curling as she threw her arm around him, pulling him to her.

“Name’s Masha. A local...guide, if you will. Say, you look pretty out of place, you got somewhere to be?” She cooed. Saturn had nearly burst into tears, explaining himself, the obelisk, the storm and his desire to be home. His voice croaked and Masha had nodded, feeling genuine sympathy for the dragon beside her.

She had patted his hands as he gazed around the market. He watched the exchange of goods and currency, the flutter of silk rooftops to keep the fresh produce from the merciless sun. Masha had hummed, glad for Saturn’s apparent fascination with the land.

“Say, Saturn, was it?” Masha had turned to him, keen. “As I’m a local guide, I’m pretty good at...y’know, guiding. How about we help each other out a little? I’m running a little empty on fish right now. I need the help of a water expert! And I can tell just by looking at you that you’ve got exactly what I’m looking for!”

Saturn had been more desperate to go home than he had been to question her. He watched her glide along the bridge and laugh at him as he struggled to find as much trust within its rotten rope and broken wood. He had been led to the Hewn City. The rocks stretched and loomed as dragons hissed and muttered, gnashing teeth and sharpened claws smashing into market stalls trying to sell wares snatched from others, bones and trinkets of questionable origin. Saturn had been taken to a murky, trickling river and eyed its oozing contents, watching the fish underneath wriggle and plop.

Masha had assured him that once she had gotten enough fish, she would provide him with a route back through the desert. She watched Saturn slither into the water, admiring the ease in which he snatched the fish and brought them up. He heard the muffled hum of her voice from under the water’s surface, claw outstretched and gaze focused on a rather impressive fish. He had brought it up with a proud grin, water bursting as he broke the surface to show off his catch.

Masha had gone. Saturn was left to the Hewn City’s infesting silence, the emptiness welling in the very pit of his stomach as he stared at the vacant space his belongings once occupied. He had been robbed. And as he slid from the banks to the cold grass, he felt the impending creep of the Hewn City’s night start to entangle his vision, leaving him helpless and stranded.
