T H E M E: How Did We Come to This?

Chisai is the closest thing to an honorable thief that you will ever see. She has a moral compass, she's just inclined to hold a magnet near it. Chisai is aware of the implications of the operation she runs out of the Silent Crow Outpost, but she finds a sort of silent honor in making her business as efficient as possible. Her operatives are held accountable for their actions in the field. Not a drop of blood is spilled in excess. The Silent Crow operates like a finely wound Swiss watch and the full brunt of Chisai's brutality is only seen when wrenches try to get at the gears. Chisai's ruthlessness lies in her efficiency. If something can be done well, then it should be done well. New hires at the Outpost learn this very quickly.

Although Chisai and Copernicus have a rather rocky personal history, they have discovered that they make excellent business partners. Chisai keeps the bloodthirsty Tundra under control and Copernicus offers a level of necessary intimidation that Chisai simply can't achieve on her own. Facing one of them from the other side of a negotiation table is challenge enough, let alone both of them at once.

Chisai's primary weakness can be found outside of her body in the form of Sunbeam, her young son and the only blood heir to the Silent Crow. Sunbeam is the only one of Chisai's children who was not sold off to an apprenticeship at a young age. Chisai never planned to be a mother, not properly, but Sunbeam was born sick and has remained so ever since, and something in Chisai couldn't let him go. She knew he wouldn't survive. She knew she would never forgive herself. So Sunbeam has, in her world, lived up to his namesake. He brightens up the outpost's dining room, both literally and figuratively. Although she would be loathe to admit it, Sunbeam ties Chisai to her humanity. Her empathy is wrapped up in him and his continued health and happiness. Anything that makes her boy cry is a threat in her eyes.

Part of Chisai's close watch on Sunbeam is due to his uncanny resemblance to Copernicus. As far as Sunbeam knows, Akuma, the former head of the Technical Department, is his father. As far as Chisai tells him, Sunbeam has no connection to Copernicus whatsoever. Still, Copernicus and Chisai called off their courtship before Sunbeam's nest was hatched. Copernicus has nothing to say to the rumors that skitter around the outpost. Still, his subtle similarity to Sunbeam can be seen now and again, like a trick of the light. They carry the same glint in their eyes when something interests them.

Chisai's typical work day is actually rather mundane from an outside perspective. She sits through reports from the department heads. She approves various outgoing shipments including potion ingredients, banned literature, dangerous potions, and every kind of weaponry under the sun. She arranges necessary but ultimately dry diplomacy meetings.

Eloise, Chisai's trusted Acquisitions Manager, buys low, sells high, and smooth talks like her life depends on it. The Outpost isn't just an illegal trading hub. Although it started as a racket to pull in as much money as possible, Copernicus quickly drove the Silent Crow deeper and deeper into the underbelly of organized crime. Chisai has accepted this. Her disposition makes her job alarmingly easy. The Crow is now considered the head of one of the biggest crime networks in the Tangled Wood.

One of the things that makes Chisai so formidable is those supporting her. Unlike most of Copernicus's contacts, Chisai's loyalists are tied to her, not to her position. Despite her stature, Chisai emanates a constant, quiet threat; a promise that to cross her is to cross every member of an increasingly dangerous organization.
