"Well, what on Sornieth did you think was going to happen when you died? Surely you didn't believe you'd go live happily with the deities."

"No, no! I just assumed I'd sit in a pit of thorns, or maybe even stuck in a patch of blinding sunlight, being tortured for eternity. This is just.... not that," the Spiral said, looking towards the mass of creatures before him. They were all shapes and sizes, but one thing was common- they all had perfectly round, blank white eyes. And they stared right into his soul.

"Alright, listen. Your task is to take care of these. They're called shadowkits, and one lives in the shadow of every living being on the planet. Normally, they are calm and content to stay in their place, but every now and then some crazy mage up and sets theirs free. After that, the shadowkit thirsts for souls to keep it in a physical state. If left unfed, they could go after their own shadow-owner, killing them both. Your job, then, is to make sure these freed shadowkits have plenty of young souls to feast on. Each one eats once a month. Good luck!"

With that, the mysterious voice went quiet, and Vaatik was left alone with somewhere close to fifty shadowkits.

"...Great."

"Wait a minute. I have to take care of all of you, but... do I even have my own? Hey, you, fat one over there in the corner. Any idea if I have my own shadowkit? Or not? Maybe mine died when I did?"

The chubby looking shadowkit blinked at him, shrugged, made a yawning noise and curled up to take a nap.

Then, one of the shadowkits chasing its tail stopped for a moment. It turned its head to Vaatik and leaped for him, latching onto his face before he had a chance to register what was happening.

"Uh... sure. Either you're mine, or you just really like me. You're a tiny little thing, aren'tcha?"

The shadowkit produced a purring noise, clinging to his face with its sharp little claws. It was almost too cute to be painful, but not quite, and Vaatik carefully unlatched the talons.

"I think I'll call you Itsy. Itsy bitsy. Alright, I guess I have to find you guys some food now. Who's hungry?"

All of the shadowkits raised their paws, except for the chubby one, who simply huffed loudly.
