B I O G R A P H Y

The first vision came when Nex was just barely out of hatchling-hood.

His sight fogged over, and he staggered, collapsing to the ground as his parents’ faces swam into view before him. His brothers were gone. His parents stared him down until he crouched in apology, guilt and loneliness tearing through him in a feeling of unspeakable loss. Faintly, he heard the gasps and astonished cries of his brothers, Hex and Vex, though he couldn’t quite tell if the sounds belonged with the vision or in the real world.

When Nex came to his senses, he saw his brothers were in the same prostrated position as he, all staring around at each other in shock. And their parents stood over them, gesturing wildly and screeching for them to get out.

They were cast out; separated. Nex didn’t have time to talk to his brothers. He only knew that Vex was scrambling up, swaying, and then fleeing, and Hex was doing the same in the opposite direction, and then he was all alone under the hard stares of his parents until he sank to a crouch.

Years passed. His parents accepted him back now that his brothers were gone, but loss ached in Nex’s heart, and the judging stares of the clan weighed heavy on his shoulders every time he had a vision. He learned to hide them, learned to escape from social situations the moment he could feel his sight blurring, and learned to keep himself silent as he watched the ends of important events. He couldn’t bear it for more than a few years before he finally left, journeying to the Windsinger, deity of his birth, to ask for advice.

The vision finally came when Nex was resting atop a kite in the Cloudsong. He saw his brothers deep in Shadow territory, saw a clan who would welcome them in and not judge them for their visions, and a sense of determination finally returned to his heart. He knew that was where he was supposed to go.

And so he flew.

Shadow territory was just as dark and menacing as he would have expected, yet Nex’s heart grew lighter as he pushed through the tangled undergrowth. Leaves dropped on him and got tangled in his clothing, but he pushed onward, sure that in just a few more steps, he would see his long lost brothers again.

And finally, they were there, staring at each other with shock in their faces. Nex stepped from the shadows and shook himself clear of leaves, then for the first time in years, he felt a smile of pure joy break across his face.

Here, in Umbra Sanguis, they finally reunited.
