B I O G R A P H Y

The first vision came when Hex was just barely out of hatchling-hood.

His sight fogged over, and he staggered, collapsing to the ground as his parents’ faces swam into view before him. They gestured and screeched, ordering him out and away, driving him into loneliness. Faintly, he heard the gasps and astonished cries of his brothers, Vex and Nex, though he couldn’t quite tell if the sounds belonged with the vision or in the real world.

When Hex came to his senses, he realized he could no longer see out of his right eye, and his brothers were in the same prostrated position as he, all staring around at each other in shock. And their parents stood over them, repeating the same gestures and screeches that Hex had seen in his vision.

They were cast out; separated. Hex didn’t have time to talk to his brothers. He only knew that Vex was scrambling up, swaying, and then fleeing, and without much thought, he did the same in the opposite direction.

He couldn’t say how long he wandered. The visions came to him at odd times, always forecasting the beginning of important events, though Hex couldn’t see anything beyond that no matter how hard he tried. Aching with loneliness, he wandered all over Sornieth, visiting the temples of the deities and praying for a vision that would let him find his brothers again.

The vision finally came when Hex was resting atop the Spiral Keep. He saw a clan deep in Shadow territory, saw the entrance of the lair, and felt a sense of belonging and peace settle deep in his heart. Even though the vision ended abruptly there, he knew that was where he was supposed to go.

And so he flew.

Shadow territory was just as dark and menacing as he would have expected, yet Hex’s heart grew lighter as he pushed through the tangled undergrowth. The entrance to the lair was right where he’d expected it would be.

As soon as he’d stopped in front of the lair, the bushes around him rustled. Hex turned to see his brothers forcing their way through the same tangled undergrowth.

Here, in Umbra Sanguis, they finally reunited.
