From a very young age, it was apparent that Borra would be different. Rather than joining the clan's flock of boisterous hatchlings in their play, he preferred to keep to himself. Instead of sharing the other hatchlings' excited curiosity whenever the Storm Crows returned with a new patient, Borra would immediately hide himself - usually in the library. Amou accepted her odd son's ways without comment but his father was troubled. Grateful as he was not to have passed on his painful and troublesome Gembond infection to this quiet child, Wendigo nevertheless became concerned enough to speak to the Matriarch.

He found her in the middle of decocting some herbal tincture. No nonsense as usual, Wei Qi was brusque at first, irritated at being interrupted. "Wendigo, some hatchlings are simply shy. It doesn't mean your son has a problem. You yourself aren't exactly boisterous." She glared down her snout at the flustered Skydancer.

"No, no it's something else. Borra seems overly troubled or anxious almost all the time, but yet if I ask him what the matter is, he can never answer me." He plucked nervously at the errant crystals jutting out of his wrist.

The Matriarch scowled, causing Wendigo to shrink in fear. Wei Qi's temper could be vicious.

"Tell me, how does Borra react when your Gembond flares up and causes you pain?"

Wendigo cocked his head to the side, thinking. "Now that you mention it, he shrinks away from me and refuses to touch me! It always hurt my feelings that he never wanted to comfort me when all of his other siblings always have."

"Can he tell you why?"

"He...he says it tingles and burns when I'm hurting, whatever that means."

Wei Qi nodded. "Ah, Borra is an empath."

"Wait, I'm confused. Of course Borra feels empathy, we raised him to be sensitive to the needs of others."

The Matriarch stopped him with a raised claw. "There is a vast difference between being capable of empathy and being a true empath. Borra hides himself away because he quite literally feels what others are feeling; he takes on their qi. I imagine he's probably very overwhelmed and perhaps frightened by what he's feeling. He has great potential, but will require careful training to shield himself." She paused, tail lashing. "You may need to send him away from here."

"What?!"

"Hear me out. He has the potential for greatness, but not if he loses his mind to the chaos of this hospital. We are inundated with pain here, physically, mentally, and spiritually. For a young empath, such a constant flood of negative qi can become deadly. I will help you make arrangements."

Wendigo returned home feeling even more troubled. To his surprise, Borra was waiting for him.

"Father, I need to speak with you." The young Skydancer's eyes were even more serious than usual.

Wendigo sat down. "I believe I know what this is about. I need to run it by your mother, but you should know that we will do everything in our power to help you."

Wei Qi herself taught Borra the techniques to ward his mind. She confided that her knowledge came from her own direct experience and for the first time, Borra actually felt that his "problem" might actually be a gift. He allowed himself to feel just a little bit pride in his resemblance to the world-famous healer. Still, each new patient who arrived presented him with new torment, and Borra became steadfast in his resolution to find his own way.

The time finally came. Borra always knew that his father was by far the more emotional of his parents. Amou had merely asked a few questions, shrugged, and helped him start packing. Wendigo had a much harder time accepting what Borra had already known for awhile; that leaving the clan would be the best for him. Borra pointed out that many hatchlings joined the Wu Xing Clan right out of the egg; why should his departure be any different? Soft-hearted Wendigo eventually conceded the point, and loaded him down with far more supplies than he could ever use.

Stepping to the platform's edge, Borra looked out over the Shifting Expanse. Squinting into the wind, he tried to make out the boundaries of Lightning's territory. Somewhere out there, his new life was waiting.
---
Borra traveled for months, flying over the Scarred Wasteland, the Sea of a Thousand Currents, The Windswept Pleteau, and the Scarred Wasteland. Every once in a while he landed to investigate small clans, but it seemed whenever he arrived, a great emotional disaster was occuring, and he had to leave before it overwelmed him.

Eventually, he found himself in the Starfall Isles. He had almost run out of hope, and was considering living in solitude, when he found a small clan residing in the Starwood Strand. He didn't expect it to work for him, but he was exhausted, and collapsed outside. Suna found him and immediately brought him in. She gave him a quiet, isolated nest to recover in, and he never left.

The clan was relatively calm, and Kouun and others taught him how to get away when the pressure of his gift became too much. Over time, he learned to control the emotions that surged him. He has learned to use it to help those around him and comfort those who were suffering.
