Elkire is a forever hatchling. Hatched by a loving couple, her death was swift and kind.

Rescued by her brother and taken to an undead necromancer, Elkire was ‘reborn’ when the necromancer’s experiment failed and she was abandoned. Found later in a swamp by a couple of dragons, she was taken to a hatchery where she was to grow up.
Now an orphan, Elkire spent many years in the hatchery before the busy caretakers finally started to realise that she wasn’t maturing, or growing. Her heart beat mechanically, and she breathed like a hatchling would, but she gazed at the world with the same child-like wonder that 2 day old hatchlings experienced. She knew basic words and sentences, but never grasped grammar or sense. She had a wild form of magic, that crackled and exploded if her emotions rose too high. She was, in every essence, a 10 year old newborn.

And no dragon, no mater what studies or tests they could do on her, could figure out why she would never grow up. One dragon suggested killing her and performing an autopsy, but that idea was swiftly abolished. She seemed to survive accidents that would main or kill more… alive… hatchlings, and rumours had spread that maybe she would never die.
No one knew how close that was to the truth.
If she wasn’t frozen at such an immature state, she would be the perfect weapon.

The egg sat in a cold, tragic silence on the table. Magical instruments and runes lay scattered around ominously. The egg was from the earth flight and looked for all intents and purposes fine, until one noticed the long, fatal crack going from one tip to the other. No liquid escaped, but Coyote knew. The egg had been abandoned and was dead. Kileth, a dragon from Clan Cross, had presented it to her, asking if perhaps it could be his sister, or if she could at least save it. When a child comes to her with such a tearful request, how could Coyote say no?

So, she got to work, her long claws delicately pulling the egg apart, so she could survey how mature the foetus inside was. To her surprise, the pearlcatcher hatchling was already fully formed, though cold and unmoving. Coyote reached in and grasped the baby, cradling it gently. Albumen dripped down her claws and arms, though she paid it no mind as she surveyed her 'project'. The brown scales were nice, the wings of decent length, and Coyote liked the splash of colour the gold stripes from the baby's skink gene gave her, though the dull underbelly gene could use some work. Satisfied with what she saw, Coyote placed the baby on the table and got to work.

First was cutting open the hatchling and removing the dead heart. Once stopped no magic could revive it. Next step came with intense care. Too much resulted in a dud. To little resulted in a dud. The amount had to be just right.

It was a magical concoction of blood and potion, glowing faintly but charged with Coyote's magic. The blood came from a beastclanner that the hunters had killed, harvested in secret by a twitchy tundra called Wylde. A serthis, Coyote was sure. She drew the blood up in a special needle, reinforced to pierce through scales, though she didn’t need it for this hatchling. After holding the blood up to the light and tapping it with a sticky claw, she slowly bent over and pumped it into the baby's veins. As the new blood flowed Coyote whispered enchantment so the body would accept and adapt to the new addition, to make more when it was needed and expel what was dead - just like in a real dragon. The blood made the veins glow but to the outside world it would look like the Rune gene than being of true magical origin. With the concoction and enchantment in place Coyote turned away to grab the replacement heart, a rune and magic infused construction, but cursed when she looked back. There must have been a tear in a vein as the glowing blood pooled in the baby's belly in swirls. The delicate work ruined, Coyote shoved the construct haphazardly within the hatchling. With no serthis blood that construct was worthless now and she just couldn't harvest it again. A Plague egg sat on the edge of the room, as if mocking her failed attempt.

Kileth would not notice the difference in eye colour, she decided.

Hours later she stole out of her den and out of the clan, hatchling hastily sewn back together and wrapped in an old tattered blanket. She had a place to hide it, just like her other duds. Deep within the Swamp lay an old village, only recently inhabited by nasty illegal dragons. Mass graves had started popping up in the area, which Coyote utilised often. Another grave wouldn’t matter. Her clan’s dragons honoured the treaty they had with the Tribe and respected their territory. Besides, no one wanted to disturb the more dangerous dragons. She dug quickly and as quietly as she could to avoid detection. Placing the dud in the hole she felt a pang of guilt. Kileth would be sad to know the egg was a dud for an unforeseen circumstance, and the blood pooling into the hatchling's belly was quite pretty. It almost... glimmered. Still, ruined was ruined and she started covering it with the dirt. A sudden snap and the murmur of voices startled Coyote and having to make a quick decision she abandoned her task half done. Whoever stumbled upon it she could only hope it would not lead them back to Clan Cross.

As she flew away she did not see the hatchling stir.

ETYMOLOGY - It is believed that the name was originally derived from the Old English word ""ealdgar,"" meaning ""noble spear."" Alternatively, in some instances, the name signifies ""of Altcar,"" a village near Ormskirk in Lancashire.
