Home's head physician and the husband of Lothur, the headmaster. Cielo is a brilliant and well-travelled doctor, and is responsible not only for ensuring the health and safety of every dragon who lives at Home but also training future healers, doctors, and apothecaries.

- Biography
Like his husband, Cielo was born in the Hewn City but was orphaned at a young age. He grew up in a Light orphanage and says he has always wanted to become a doctor. His studious and dedicated personality helped him reach this goal quickly, and he has lived and worked all throughout Light territory, most often practicing as a field medic along the borders, where dominance battles are frequent and doctors are always needed. He intended to stay at Home for only a little while, but the orphanage tugged at his heartstrings, and soon enough his plans were interrupted further when he and Lothur fell in love. He settled in quickly at Home and soon decided to stay, now one of its longest-serving faculty board members.

- Life at Home
As head physician, Cielo is responsible for overseeing the other healers and doctors on Home's faculty board and is often on-call to help residents and faculty members with any illnesses or injuries. His former specialty as a combat medic means that he works quickly and efficiently, and he has a knack for being able to tell when a hatchling is faking to get out of class. Because of his additional responsibilities as Home's head doctor, Cielo typically only teaches advanced pre-medical classes and tutors older residents who are in medical school. Like Lothur, he can usually be found worrying over one thing or another - running an orphanage is a lot of work, after all, and even more so when one is a doctor.

- Relationships
Cielo enjoys spending time with his husband Lothur and their sons, Ezio and Emilio. His boys often find him while he's in his office working so they can chat about their days, and he embarrasses them by keeping awkward hatchling photos of them on his desk. He and Lothur often seem to know exactly what the other is thinking, leading to much annoyance for Home's residents when they try to trick one of them and end up getting stuck in endless loops of "go ask your other dad." Cielo never had a family before coming to Home, and he prefers to present himself as a distant academic type, telling himself he would never grow attached to the dragons here. That did not last long. Home's residents call Lothur Dad; they call Cielo Abba. Though he is popular with Home's residents and has many friends on the faculty board, neighbouring Clans are not fans of him due to his inability to take insults lying down. Slights to himself he can take, but if he even hears a whisper that you've insulted the dragons he cares about, he'll "accidentally" charge double for his doctor's visit.

- Personality
Although Cielo is often rather stern and formal by nature, he still has a sense of humour, well known for his dry jokes and quips. Very soft-spoken and polite, he prefers to complain privately to Lothur rather than make a scene. He has extremely high expectations for the dragons he trains, and will accept nothing less than their best effort. He can easily be seen as aloof or uncaring to those who don't know him well. Despite his stern nature, though, he is very patient, willing to explain concepts again and again in a thousand different ways until it clicks. He loves nothing more than lending books from his personal library to interested students. He has quite the dramatic streak, and can be rather passive-aggressive when annoyed; most dragons at Home know to apologize when they get on his bad side or they'll never hear the end of it.

Cielo's Journal
A Doctor's Notes

To Practice Medicine
To be a doctor in Sornieth means a dragon must also have a good anatomical and physiological knowledge of every dragon that crosses their threshold. Unfortunately, many modern doctors skip this step, often preferring to practice only among dragons of their own breed. As Home's chief physician, it is my responsibility to train all of our aspiring healers in how to provide the best possible care for each patient, taking breed into account. My notes and general observations on the general anatomy and health of each breed currently living at Home follow.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Banescale
Banescale are an Ancient Fire species. They are covered in interlocking scales, and are notable for lacking forelimbs. Any lair with Banescale residents should attempt to make accommodations so that Banescale Clan members have equitable access to resources. The vast majority of Banescale are able to use modern tools and other items with their hindlimbs, which possess dexterous claws, especially if they are provided with tools purchased with their ease of use in mind. A breed well-suited to aviation, preserving wing function should be a priority when treating injuries, and a longer healing time is a suitable trade-off for a more complicated procedure to save wing function. The fact that their scales interlock means a wound affecting a small number might also necessitate the removal of surrounding scales.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Coatl
A modern Fire breed, Coatl are relatively rare in this part of the world. They have a full coat of plumage, and this plumage can be a prime indicator of a sick Coatl as it tends to become much less vibrant when the Coatl is ill or wounded. It can be much more difficult to detect on plumage changes on Coatl with naturally paler colours, which likely led to the myth that light-coloured Coatl are always sickly. Coatl are unique among dragon species in that they possess two hearts rather than one; this additional heart does not provide notably greater endurance, so my suspicion is that the extra heart is simply for redundancy. Coatl should receive cardiovascular heart exams more often than other dragons. Cardiovascular issues are still very serious, as Coatl do need both hearts working properly to function as normal, though they can survive with one. A Coatl with only one functioning heart will suffer from noticeably impaired endurance and suffer from breathing problems. To address stereotypes: many Coatl do speak native Coatl at home, especially in all-Coatl Clans, but most contemporary Coatl are also perfectly fluent in standard draconic. Coatl do not have a traditional ear structure, but most are still able to hear and interpret as well as dragons from other breeds; the common myth that Coatl cannot understand other dragons is old superstition.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Fae
The smallest breed of dragon, Fae are a modern Arcane breed. They tend to be frail, so a hatchling's first flight should be prepared for with plenty of protective padding. Even as adults, Fae are prone to breaks and fractures. Greenstick-type breaks are common in Fae of all ages, in comparison to other breeds, where they are most common in hatchlings. Fae express emotion through their crests, though it is a myth that they are always monotone speakers or cannot communicate well with dragons of other breeds. While it is true Fae-only Clans tend not to use body language, they are perfectly capable of learning and becoming socialized to it. Fae raised in or adapted to inter-species Clans can communicate as well as any other dragon. Fae dragons tend to be rather magically-attuned and produce a high number of gifted magicians; hatchling magic screening is highly recommended.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Gaolers
Gaolers are an Ancient Ice breed and tend to be very hardy, prone to few genetic ailments. For the most part, the typical Gaoler is a doctor's dream. Gaolers who are newly exposed to modern Sornieth should quickly get up-to-date on their vaccinations, as most will notice immune system impairment as they acclimate. The one thing to be watched for in all Gaolers is a stuck shed on antlers, which tends to be prone to recurring, so keeping a close watch on antler sheds is a must.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Imperials
The first Light breed, many Imperials tend to be a medical headache. The lower generation an Imperial is, the worse it will fare; second-generation Imperials typically have unpredictable lifespans and generally poor health. Their very long spines are prone to spinal chord and vertebrae issues. Slipped disks and pinched nerves are very common ailments. Imperials need more frequent health checkups than dragons of other breeds, very prone to wasting sicknesses. I recommend annual physicals for other dragon breeds and bi-annual physicals for Imperials. Prospective healers should read the next few lines very carefully. If an Imperial dragon is terminally ill, they should not be cared for by Imperial healers or kept in close proximity to other sick Imperials. No Imperials should visit a recently deceased Imperial. Light officials should be contacted to advise on burial.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Mirrors
A modern Plague breed, Mirrors are clearly Plague's children in that they are very hardy and generally easily bounce back from sickness. Doctors should know that Mirrors have a very fast metabolism and need a greater food portion than other dragons of the same age and size. Mirrors have two pairs of eyes, one for standard vision and the other for heat signature. Healers should receive training in how to perform eye exams on both pairs of eyes; Mirror dragons should be advised to have more frequent eye exams, as the smaller set of eyes is prone to very fast macular degeneration if not spotted early.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Nocturne
A Modern Shadow breed known for their tendency to mimic. Contrary to popular superstition, all Nocturne do have their own personalities, and for many the urge to mimic others extends exclusively to physical quirks. For the majority of Nocturne, mimicry is just that - an urge, and one that most are easily able to ignore, though a comfortable Nocturne will mimic the behaviours of the dragons closest to them. Nocturnes tend to compulsively hide their ills without even being conscious of it, making frequent health checks all the more important.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Obelisks
A modern Earth breed, Obelisks are frankly any doctor's dream. They're sturdy, with armored scales and thick hides, and possess the incredible ability to change to and from stone at will. The single problem intrinsic to their breed is that their wings, while sturdier than those of most dragons, are not as thick or heavily-built as the rest of their bodies, and broken wingbones and torn wing membranes are slightly more common than in other breeds.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Pearlcatchers
The second of Light's children, Pearlcatchers are frequently much healthier on average than Imperials. Some Pearlcatchers have difficulty producing enough mucus to grow their pearls; supplements exist to assist with this problem but must be administered regularly. Pearlcatchers should be advised: pearl mucus is not recommended for patching wounds except in cases where absolutely no alternative exists. The resulting scarring can be life-threatening on its own.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Skydancers
Skydancers are a modern Wind species. Having both fur and feathers means they are prone both to mites and ticks and damaged feathers, making them an absolute nightmare for the dermatologist. All Skydancers are able to sense magical energies and subconsciously pick up on the emotions of others; whether or not they are able to consciously register this information is an individual trait. Like Fae dragons, Skydancers are very fragile and prone to broken bones. Their long necks also make neck and spinal injuries a risk. Tail fractures are extremely common - in fact, only slightly less than half of all Skydancers will have crooked tails as the result of breaks by adulthood. Antennae will grow back if broken or cut; however, most Skydancers will need to walk with assistance after antennae trauma due to how much they rely on energy signatures (this will usually take convincing; most dragons are unaware of how accustomed they are to these readings).
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Spirals
A modern Wind breed, Spirals tend to be generally healthy but are prone to spinal and wing injuries. Either such injury can be devastating, both physically and emotionally, so Spirals should be thoroughly trained in aviation safety.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Tundras
A modern Ice breed, Tundras shed their fur coat biannually. The common misconception that Tundras are unintelligent or forgetful dragons is untrue. Even the most forgetful Tundra will not need to be talked to like a hatchling or have instructions repeated incessantly. Many Tundras simply have a better olfactory memory and a slightly worse memory for faces and numbers. This excellent olfactory memory means many Tundras might benefit from scented note-taking pens or other scented memory aids.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Veilspun
Veilspun are an Ancient Shadow breed. Like their modern cousins, the Nocturne, they will tend to hide their pain without being consciously aware of it, making vigilance essential. This is especially true because Veilspun are extremely fragile dragons. Wing care and safety should be prioritized during aviation training. Adult Veilspun will usually be able to move quickly and nimbly enough to avoid injury, but very, very few Veilspun hatchlings make it to adulthood without having broken at least one bone. Veilspun have thin, hollow, light bones that are prone to easy breaks. Because their bones are so delicate, light splints, such as tape splints, should be considered after bone fractures. Veilspun are also sensitive to temperature, and may fall into torpor if they become too cold. Indoor heating is a must for a Veilspun's room. The doctor of a Veilspun must be constantly vigilant.
tumblr_inline_n1xc79Kcic1rb3m8r.png
Wildclaws
Wildclaws are a Modern Nature breed. They are bipedal; special care should be taken to preserve leg function in the case of ankle or knee injuries. Frequent clumsiness with flying makes such injuries quite common. Common myths that Wildclaws are poor magicians or naturally hostile are untrue, Wildclaws have just as much personality and magical variation as any other dragon and magical screening should be done just as it would for any other hatchling.
