They took pity on her. The tiny Tundra hatchling, outcast from her former clan for fear that her pale, hairless skin and bright red rash would spread disease, was welcomed with open arms by Clan Valebane. With the help of Karamat's knowledge of the Nature magic of healing, Helheim recovered. Her hair grew in, a bushy green coat, silky-soft to the touch. Out of gratitude and a desire to repay her new clan, Helheim took up the role of medic. Together with Darwin and Perl, she healed dragons who came back from war, or who had fallen ill with the Pale Madness or Sleeping Fever, two common illnesses in the clan's habitat.

The greatest challenge, though, was Gembond: an epigenetic illness that struck indiscriminately and inevitably led to Crystalhide, a hardening of scale, skin, and feather that always ended with its victims becoming a living statue. Conscious and aware for some time, but unable to move or eat. Death was usually by way starvation or dehydration, though in severe cases, even the internal organs crystallized and shut down.

It was Helheim who led the cure effort. She rounded up those who were immune to Gembond - including herself, as she had discovered, and Perl, who had contracted it but hadn't progressed - and created a vaccine with the help of Darwin's knowledge from his time as a medical student. To this day, no more dragons in the clan had died of Gembond or Crystalhide, and those who had contracted Gembond or even progressed to Crystalhide remain healthy and nearly unaffected by their illness. Helheim, once a mangy hatchling, had become a Plague Doctor.

The good fortune would not last, and Helheim found herself in the middle of a battle against the Light Flight. She was forced to train recruits alongside the Shambler, a Guardian dragon surrounded by mystery. Well, her task wasn't so much training as it was doing checkups and vaccinations, although she did play a part in preparing medics for the field.

Many lives were lost. Those who survived were called to live their days out beside the Plaguebringer, the highest honor given to a Plagueling. Those who died were trapped between life and death: spirits captured in the Ghostlight Ruins, unable to pass on to the next life. Bloodmorn, the clan's Necromancer, accompanied Heilheim in the task they both knew must be done. They, alongside the Shambler, laid those souls to rest by dispatching their ethereal captors.

As a result of the failed battle with Light, the former Matriarch of the clan - Lady Marre - stepped down. And as a result of Helheim's success in freeing the souls of their fallen comrades, it was generally accepted that Helheim would lead the clan now. Bloodmorn even bestowed upon her the title of Hauntlead, a champion for the undead and the highest honor Bloodmorn's former clan could give or receive. Clan Valebane, much like the Flight they belonged to, mutated into something bigger, something better. They became Clan Swaddle Dog, a family both peaceful and fierce at once. It was a dawn of a new era. One which Helheim was honored to lead.
