Alabaster

QUOTE

Alabaster came from a skydancer lair along the coast, filled with fountains and gardens, dancing and crafts. With over a hundred of the lithe breed, the clan was supremely peaceful, if sometimes dramatic. Everyone could sense what the others felt, so conflicts and squabbles were at a minimum. Alabaster, like most of the hatchlings, was babied by her parents and encouraged to chase any avenue of entertainment she took a liking to. Though her favorites were theater and dancing, by the time she grew up she was looking for something more.

The clan regularly took trips to the market, both to acquire more shiny trinkets and offer the hatchlings an opportunity to see the world beyond the clan. Many siblings found other clans to join, or adventures to pursue from there during their visits, but Alabaster found pottery. The striking colors! The fine art! She sat mesmerized in front of the potter's wheel for more than an hour before her parents came to collect her. She immediately bounded to the river by the lair to hunt for clay, but was sorely disappointed when, upon having one of the adults fire it, the material cracked and flaked. Though it didn't stop her from shaping more, she begged to be let along on the next trip to ask the potter for advice.

The old Earth Ridgeback was gruff and not inclined to take an apprentice, but gave her a few tips on finding the right clay. When, a few months later, she brought him her first fired piece, red river clay with black zigzags and accents, his first response was 'Well, at least you kept it mostly upright.' She'd practically wilted, even though she could feel that he wasn't disappointed like he sounded. After a moment of consideration, they told her to come back before her clan left. Thus began her first lessons on a pottery wheel.

She wasn't their apprentice, by any stretch of the word. They weren't interested in teaching, nor did they have a special technique to pass on. But they were willing to let her use one of their wheels as long as she brought her own clay, and gave her tips when she got stuck. She dug her own clay until her bowls were good enough to use in the clan and people in the market bought them. She tested paints and designs, in two years accumulating shaping tools, a small kiln and even a wheel of her own. Even if she still visited the ridgeback sometimes to show off her progress. It was always gratifying to see their face break out into a toothy grin.

Her signature style became popular quickly: pristine white china native to the ruins painted with exquisite natural and geometric designs in blue and black. As commissions rolled in for full sets of tablewear or flower vases, she evaluated her customers as well; her clan was changing and now that she was older, it was time for her to find her own home.
The mirror and pearlcatcher duo that arrived did not raise her hopes initially. The pearlcatcher male had been around earlier, inspecting the plates and complimenting her on her beautiful art. The mirror looked to be a proper fusion between her birth and species flight; a civilized barbarian in steel claws, scars and an ornate sword. She took them off to handle the plates at least, thank the gods. She was clearly the one in charge and seemed suitably impressed. While they ordered a set, the mirror remarked
"Belael tells me you are looking for a new clan." A bit bewildered because she didn't mention anything around either of them, she replied,
"Well yes, why do you ask?"
"We're looking to bring more artisans into the clan. Would you consider it?"
".....May I see the clan first?" Alabaster asked, and not long after, she got her first introduction to clan Mediasolis.

It's part what she expected and part.... not. Sure it's militant, which is offputting, but the other half of it, the scholars, the academic healers, the artist, the working class skinner and lacer..... That feels welcome. She takes another two weeks to think about it after the visit.... looking at the rest of her visitors....
She can always move on to another clan if she wants. But as she settles in and chats with everyone, it feels too exciting to want to leave just yet.
