Ephemeral is one of a small otherworldly group of dragons known as the Shattered. The shattered were once ancient dragons who practiced an old and long-forgotten form of Arcane magic that warps space itself into a tangible and weavable material. The Shattered are said to have learned this magic from the Arcanist themselves, but there is no proof, nor evidence of this magic in any historical documentation. What’s stranger, those who encounter a Shattered do not usually remember the event, but there is always evidence of their passage. Time is often warped, and entire portions of the area a Shattered appeared in can simply not exist anymore, or be enveloped in their distinct galaxy-like magical residue. What many of the shattered didn’t know was that once an entity was bound to this magic, using it would eventually warp a dragon beyond saving. Even though the magic gifted immortality, it resulted in a forfeit of one’s sanity. A Shattered is more of a gibbering mass of time and space than a creature one can reason or communicate with. They are nothing but flickering beasts who pop in and out of existence and time for the rest of their continued existence. Successfully summoning one and communicating with it, much less convincing it to teach you their magic, is near-impossible, and often deadly. That, obviously, didn’t stop young Nebula when she first met Ephemeral. The magic they possess is just as much a disease as it is a skillset. You do not have to be of Arcane heritage, or a Dragon at all, to learn to harness its power, and become bound to its whim. Of course, there are ways to stave off the eventual loss of self that comes with using Shattered magic (Known as the Static). The less one dips into the Static, the slower it takes for it to eventually overwhelm your body. Additionally, if a user is desperate, sacrificing one of your senses to the static early can add centuries to your existence. For example, Solstice was too young and unskilled when Nebula first taught her the binding, and wasted away years of her life in days abusing the Static’s power. In order to save her, Nebula convinced Solstice to sacrifice her sight. |
