In his youth, Augustus displayed none of the wisdom and restraint he is now known for. He flitted from dragoness to dragoness as a hummingbird drinks its fill from one flower and moves to the next, leaving a trail a broken hearts and fatherless hatchlings in his wake.

It was this carelessness that changed his life, when he abandoned his last conquest to pursue the next pretty female that caught his eye. Unbeknownst to him, his lover was a sorceress; heartbroken at his betrayal, she struck him blind with a curse, so that he would never again judge another dragon's value by her appearance alone.

At first, Augustus tried desperately to lift the spell. He tried potions and prayer to no avail, and finally, was directed to a voiceless witch deep in the wild part of the Tangled Woods. Though communication between a blind dragon and a mute one would be limited, he sought Tacita out and begged her to help him. But though he felt the magic take hold, his sight was not restored.

Defeated, he left the witch's hut and returned home. That night, he received a vision of the Sunbeam Ruins, more vivid than anything he'd ever seen with his eyes. The visions returned, night after night, until he could no longer ignore their siren call. He set out for the temple of Clan Araven.

The dragons that lived there welcomed Augustus, and he found a new life as their seer. Here he met a female named Artoria, and for the first time, he fell genuinely in love. He took her as his mate, and remained faithful as they raised several clutches of hatchlings. But one night, without so much as goodbye, she slipped away into the darkness, and never returned.

Augustus finally understood what he had done to so many before, and wept not only for grief, but for remorse.
