Blood magic is a study that most would rather not speak of. It encompasses a wide range of magical techniques which range from detecting living beings at range to, infamously, using the blood flow of another to puppet them and, in experts, destroy organs without laying a finger on them. In one of the more secret techniques, it can also prolong one's life.

The man who goes by Nightshade has a past steeped in mystery. Some say that he once worked alongside the Lightweaver and her demi-gods, some say that he learnt his trade by dedicating himself to an ancient witch of the Wasteland. Others say that it was in the deep pools of the Tangled Wood that he studied in a timeless liminal space, transcending mortal magic in the eternal night.

There are two parts to the man. He has for many, many years presented himself as a calm and charismatic man whose demeanour radiates subtlety and confidence, above it all yet treating those around him with a kind guiding hand. Every movement practiced and slow, the undercurrent of his personhood thrumming with a sort of power that doesn't require acknowledgement from others. This is true in part. He is a confident man who knows himself, full of quiet ambition which guides his steps. But he is also viciously cruel.

When the Syndicate was formed, Nightshade was the odd one out. The Awhatopana siblings trusted him, for he had saved Nakahi from death, and Urusov siblings were desperate for help. And so, as the Syndicate formed, Nightshade was free to sneak around in the dark. For every contact made, he would sow the seeds that one day, he would rip leadership out from Koschei and replace him. No one would have a choice in the matter. It would be he who ruled the Syndicate- to spite those who had long ago cast him out.

It didn't go to plan. When his mask slipped and he revealed himself to not be the father's gentle hand but a callous, cruel man who has never seen anyone as a friend. Everyone is just blood to him, shadow puppets instead of people. He singlehandedly incapacitated the Syndicate's mercenaries, killing the few whom he could not keep down- it was Rho's explosive rage that ended up besting him.

Perhaps he should have been killed. Instead, he was the Syndicate's prisoner for many years. It left him to simmer- but the simmering, oddly enough, gave him time to reflect. He did plan revenge of course, but it felt follow as the years went on. He's lived a long time, and what has he really accomplished? Power gained, and power lost. Nothing else. Power has lost its lustre under the weight of time. So when he was finally released from his restraints, he did not enact anything of the sort.

Whilst under strict supervision, he has slowly begun to change himself. You know what they say about old dogs and new tricks, and as such it's a slow business. He feels a strange change, a twinge of regret and hollow space in his chest. It is in this place that he is given a mission: to infiltrate the town of Haven and report back to the Syndicate.

Nightshade is a man with a long and bloody history. It's on his skin, scars old and new, thin bones. He's a man with a commanding voice in a small body, devastating power in his blood and a quiet murmur in the back of his mind to be kind, to kindness, that he has to try again. He has to live another life, it's the last chance he's ever going to get. Inside him is the potential to be the man he once pretended to be; the perfect teacher, a thoughtful friend, a caring father. But too inside him lives a monster which still, when the night is dark, howls for everything to bow at his feet.
