______While foraging near the border between the Ashfall Wastes and the Sea of a Thousand Currents for his favorite snack, Ruby came across an abandoned cemetery from the time of the Fourth Age, when Dragonkind was first born. He stared at the rocky graves, unable to make out the words, not because they were too old, but because Ruby did not know how to read. He then noticed a diagram drawn below the words. He was no arcane dragon, but he could tell that the inscription was magical, though nothing like he had ever seen from the Starfall Isles. Curious, he drew the diagram on the ground and, with one strong breath, lit it ablaze. At first nothing happened, and Ruby nearly turned to leave, but then the flames turned black and a shadowy dragon skull rose from the flames.

______"You have awakened me," the skull said. "and have freed me from my eternal torment."

______Shadows swirled around the skull in the way smoke swirls around a flame. As the shadows dissapated, he could make out the apperance of emaciated limbs.

______"In return," the skull continued. "I will give you a gift: full command over the dead, an ancient magic that not even the Arcainist can achieve. You can awaken them, speak to them, even command them to battle."

______With that, the mysterious dragon vanished into a cloud of smoke, leaving behind a thick book with various necromancy spells.

______"Wait!" Shouted Ruby. "I can't read."

______However, he picked up the book and kept it anyways.

______Ever since Ruby had decided to pick up that book and take it with him, he's been bothered nonstop by that skull. It must have been attached to that book, he figured, but it really didn't bother him too much. Sure, it was annoying from time to time, loudly complaining to him every chance it got about why wasn't he using that book it gave him? doesn't he know how powerful he could be? Ruby ignores him. He doesn't really plan on telling the skull that he can't read, and besides, it's amusing to watch it grumble and growl. It can complain all it wants, but until he decides he doesn't want to carry that book around with him anymore, it's stuck with him.

______Still, Ruby does enjoy the aesthetic of the whole thing, and having a floating skull following him around is really cool. The skull does not, however, think it's cool to be flaunted like some pet. Out of one torment and right back into another...
