The Shadowbinder's favor is a blessing only fools seek.

Some dragons spend their whole lives devoting themselves to their chosen deity, and never receive a single sign that their worship is received. Other dragons are singled out for divine favor, whether they wanted it or not. The deities jockey endlessly amongst themselves for prestige and influence, and the only losers are the mortals they choose to be their pawns.

Tsikala was never given the chance to live a normal life. The Shadowbinder marked her with her divine Blessing while she was still in the egg, and mere days after she hatched, her parents were 'persuaded' to allow her to be raised as one of the priestesses of Cerar Oriya's Shadow Temple. Her Blessing manifested early, and powerfully: the Shadowbinder had gifted her with foresight. When Tsikala is in the presence of individuals who face a fork in the path of their future, she sees the constellation of choices available to them. Tsikala's visions are in constant flux and are difficult to interpret, but there is always at least a sliver of truth to them.

Raised in seclusion, Tsikala had the finest education any devotee could ask for. She was taught all of the chants and rituals of the Shadowbinder, and she grew up under the personal care of the High Priest. And yet, it was an empty, cold upbringing. The priests were not unkind, but it was painfully clear to Tsikala that it was her Blessing they valued, not Tsikala herself. Their praise was for the clarity and strength of her visions, and when her gift was uncooperative, their only response was to tell her to do better next time.

Tsikala, caged by divine benevolence, dutifully carries out her appointed rituals and dispenses the wisdom of her patron deity. To the world she carefully maintains her facade of piety, but silently she seethes with resentment against the priestly order that wields her like a tool, and the goddess that consigned her before her birth to this cold, impersonal existence. And sometimes, when she walks alone through the dark empty stone halls of the Shadowbinder's temple, she could swear she hears the shadows mocking her, ringing with ghostly laughter as the deity reminds her favorite joke that the Shadowbinder never gives up what is hers.
