Biography
Layla
Business Manager
Business Manager
'You are gorgeous,' the broker at the Market said. 'Absolutely gorgeous.' A heartbeat later, with callous disregard, 'But no one will ever let you near a nest. You lack even the most obvious of genes. Get used to loneliness, girl.'
Layla was appalled, but she also didn't believe. Her father was a triple-gened glory, but her mother had only a pale strip of an underbelly, and she'd been allowed to breed. The broker didn't know what he was talking about, that was all.
...and then the weeks dragged on, and then months, and no one came for Layla.
The longer she waited, the more she feared. Perhaps the only thing that mattered in this world was beauty, and she was destined to be overshadowed by the thousands of lovelier, rarer dragons. What was left then? Maybe she could learn a trade. If she could prove herself in some other way....
By the time Reina found her in the Dragon Markets, Layla had learned to carve gems, repair gear, hunt, scavenge, fish, dig for treasure; she knew something of weather prediction, herblore, field medicine and even the rudiments of combat, though she'd never stepped foot on a battlefield. She knew how to sell, barter and haggle, had done some basic training in logistics, could sing, dance, entertain hatchlings. She did none of these things well, but by the gods, she was more than a geneless hide and dull wing.
And ironically, the first thing Reina said to her was, 'Oh, but you're so beautiful!' Resulting in a very confused skydancer comforting an imperial who had dissolved into tears.
Reina brought her home, where Layla's credentials impressed everyone. Here was a dragoness who could support the work of six or seven others! And she was lovely. The clan was pleased, for who does not like a dragon both useful and beautiful?
For her part, Layla is bewildered... but slowly, she is remembering her mother, and thinking that perhaps she was right all along.
***
Layla's found new employment... or rather, assigned herself employment. When she overheard Raia and Thelxinoe tentatively discussing painting dragons at the market, she volunteered to wrangle customers, take payment, and keep records for them. 'Someone should,' she told them. 'And I'm good at that, and not at all at painting.'
And of surprise to absolutely no one, she has been good at it--very good at it. And it's a pleasure to return to the Markets where she was once dismissed as a beautiful single-gened runt that would never find a home. To show up now as a wealthy dragoness with children of her own, a business to nurture, and her own gorgeous wingpaints and expensive silks proclaiming her as one of her clan's most prized members...
Ah yes, she thinks, while accepting yet another bag of gems and sending a dragon to her friends to be painted. Life is good. VERY good.
