Biography

keepers.png

divider02.png

A devoted clan of lorekeepers, their very existence is a close-kept secret. In their line, they have discovered a great many histories, and some of the knowledge they pass from parent to child is of a sensitive nature. There are those who would blot out such knowledge, whether to avoid scandal, keep their place in the hierarchy of their clan, or escape condemnation. More often than not, once a Keeper's identity has been discovered by an outsider, whether or not that individual means them harm, they will join the ranks of the Exalted, reluctantly leaving behind family and friends.

The only exception to this rule comes in the form of a personal guardian, chosen by hand to travel with the Keeper. This dragon may be any breed, gender, color or Flight, so long as they vow to never expose their companion's true purpose. Some take their guardian as a mate, others just a friend, sometimes the pair feign ignorance of each other until the Keeper is threatened. In rare cases, a dragon may choose a familiar to become its guardian, provided the creature is large or powerful enough to provide some modicum of protection. It is up to the individual who they will entrust their lives to.

Only another Keeper will be able to recognize one of their own, thanks to the well-camouflaged markings on their face, arms and sides. Children rarely leave the safety of the clan before adulthood, but once they are fledged, they are encouraged to travel and learn all that they can.

Many have positions as secret advisors, though few will openly take positions of power within a lair. Most are content to live within a lair, collecting knowledge and sorting truth from gossip.

Kalevala came to Endhaven from the depths of the Spiral Keep itself, along with an ice dragon who occasionally acts more like a bodyguard than a mate. Or perhaps he is both. She was welcomed in as a fellow scholar, while Vant is a valuable addition to any team the two of them join out in the Ruins. The two of them are rarely far from each other, and while her mate can be a bit silent and stand-offish, she herself is relatively amiable.

That is really the most anyone can say about her, however. She keeps mostly to her own studies, though is more than willing to engage in any discussion on a variety of subjects.

What none in the clan suspect is that her natural born talent lies in sensing different pathways the future might take. The small, inconsequential events that one might otherwise ignore, or seemingly trivial choices made on an everyday basis. If a small hatchling, say, were to trip and scrape a scale in just such a way so as to glint at just the right time when they are well grown and out on a hunting expedition, thus giving away their position to the enemy, causing the death of a clannmate. Or perhaps a mother, unsure what to name her first hatchling, chooses something that reminds another of their long-lost father's kindness, thus bringing the two together as friends, and then mates.

Endless chains of possibilities, each link a different choice or action that, if altered, could change the future in unexpected ways.

Thankfully, they are not all in her head at once. Only when something of consequence occurs and she is present to witness it. Some choices are relatively benign, leading to no drastic change. Events might seem important, but end up bearing no great impact on future events.

For some reason, Endhaven has proven to be a place where such small changes and isolated incidents have some oddly widespread ramifications. She's not entirely certain why, but it is certainly fascinating, in its own way.

Unfortunately, it is also quite tiring. Every day, Kalevala finds herself following several chains of events to their end, sometimes these chains are altered in the course of a conversation, when the other party changes their mind. Or by the end of the day, when a new discovery causes the dragon in question to consider new alternatives to their previously theorized conclusions. It's all very exhausting, and Kalevala must occasionally seek seclusion to avoid overexerting herself.

Kalevala is the progenitor of the current generation of Keepers of the Radiant Eye. She, along with her mate, instruct and induct others of their order.
