"The Pharoah blessed and cursed me, ma'am. But why should I bother, you won't know me tomorrow."

"Iruka." A name whispered in the wind, carried by centuries of sand, resting on the ink black wings of a slave and a stranger. The proudest, richest slave in Sornieth; but a slave nonetheless. His treatment compared to the others makes him an easy target, should his position be so easily found. Moving around silently, the imperial carries the talent of invisibility, able to wipe any trace of his presence if he should so wish. His ability, gifted to him by his one true lord, the Emperor, wars with his desire to show off his spoils. Be unseen and forgotten, or be seen and dazzled? He'd drop it all for Dingo though. The one dragon who can never see him regardless of his spells, the one he was originally tasked to watch, the one he fell in love with. Iruka is cursed to watch his love live and die as the sun rises and sets, while he stays forever unseen by him. Forever unnoticed. The curse does not stop there. His blood relations live in the Tribe, as does Dingo and Iruka. He may meet them, but their memories are wiped of him as the sun sets. By dawn, he is a stranger. And so he sits, and watches. And cries.

They were jealous of him. The tiny bells and beads — dangling all over his mottled frame — jingled faintly as he approached. This dawn, the desert sand was as white as milk. The other Imperials who had summoned the Emperor stood frozen around the black beast, contorted in positions of anger and misery. Only their eyes could move. They looked down their noses as he passed them by, and he ignored them as he would statuary. He approached the Emperor slowly. Two of the three heads were slumbering, and he didn’t want to surprise them. Only he could slip away, not held wholly in the Pharoah’s thrall. He bent down with a grunt and sigh, and prostrated himself. A cloud of infinitely black scales waved in the upper parts of his vision. There was a story he always told himself to pass the time. It was about a young, handsome, strong Imperial priest who slowly worked his way up to a mighty king — as mighty as a god. He had gotten to the part where he killed many dragons. Then, a gravelly voice whispered, “You humble yourself before me again. Arise, and thank you for answering my summons.” Iruka slowly did. He didn’t flinch away when one of the long, pointed Emperor claws caressed his face. It probed the spaces in his scales, tasting him. The other Imperials looked on, blind with hatred, craving the Emperor’s touch. Finally, the Emperor lightly tapped him on the forehead. All three heads were awake, now, and gently bobbing in the breeze. “This may be the last time you ever see me.” Iruka’s maniacal dreams ground to a halt. He opened his mouth to express sadness, then closed it. “Yes,” the Emperor continued. “My chosen one and his adoptive father are leaving the realm of my sight.” How is that possible? Iruka wondered, blinking. Isn’t his sight —“ “No, not even my own is infinite.” The Emperor almost smiled. Iruka was fascinated, as the others were, by how expressive and mobile the large black heads were. The scales had an oily sheen, running thick with colors like indigo and russet. Each new movement of the sun revealed a dark and blended rainbow. The thought of never seeing that again… Iruka’s heart leapt within his breast. “I need you to follow them,” the Emperor continued, oblivious. “Stealthily, of course. To watch over them.” Stealthily. Iruka looked shamefacedly at his long, Imperial body. Before he could make any answer, the Emperor had scooped sand into three great paws of his. He let it fall on Iruka in a rough, unending torrent. Iruka’s vision blurred as he hacked and coughed, sand pouring down his nostrils and into his lungs, making his chest seize, flooding in-between his scales. I am going to die, he thought, and when he did, the torrent ceased. When his vision cleared, the Emperor’s muzzle was placed against his. Iruka gasped and wheezed. “You aspire to a position greater than your current one,” the Emperor rumbled. “And I’ll not have that in my presence. Go.” “Thank you, my lord!” Iruka managed. Then he looked back at his body. He felt it — yes, he felt the sting of the sand heating up. But he didn’t see it. “Think invisible thoughts to complete my task.” The Emperor’s eyes were closing. “And be gone.” Written by the wonderful @Caelyn

“Oy. Move.” Paragon’s face was a mask of grim and tears. He shoved on Dingo’s shoulders. Neither had moved from the empty camp. If the boy had been spacy before, now he was a menace. Empty. Dark. Slack-jawed. No. Paragon felt the tears begin again. He lifted the large boy onto his own despairing shoulders and began to stumble away. Neither of them was aware of the small, subtle shift in sand behind them, or of the light pawprints that tracked them out of the desert.

hey, umm, I feel personally offended at how pretty this dragon is?? His skin fits him so amazingly well and it all blends in so nicely with his apparel that I don't think I've ever seen a dragon just... similar to him, which is amazing! The web on his wings adds just the right balance to his original color. I'm really impressed!
