CONSTRUCT - Reaper

Copper Amulet of Transmutation Ashspine Widow Dusty Pauper Garniture

There was nothing, and then there was a voice. It was like listening to the radio, to the tinny transmissions that zipped through the Shifting Expanse. The voice crackled with static, in time with the stars bursting behind her eyes, and in the softest tones, it said, "I will save you."

It did.

She didn't believe, at first. No voice alone could work such powerful magics. Death was stronger than any whispered words. And yet, when she next heard the voice, it came from a dragon that sat before her, eyes luminous as they surveyed their work. "I promised I would save you. Mother always keeps her promises." Then she cocked her head to the side, pausing for the briefest moment to collect her thoughts. "Do you remember your name?"

How easy it should have been to say yes. To offer a name and a history. But there was nothing but empty space in those corners of her brain, space that didn't even flicker as she pressed deeper for answers.

Mother named her Construct then, after her salvaged form. Under Mother's meticulous care, she had been spared from the horrors of death and offered second life. She had no flesh, but she had bone and steel and sinew to bind it all together. She had new eyes, too, eyes that flickered between her ribs, along her tail, cresting the ridges of her skull and glowing bright. New eyes to see a new world. A new life.

If it could be called that.

When she could not feel a heartbeat, felt no blood rushing through her veins, there was a moment of panic. It worsened when she knew her chest should have tightened, when the world should have spun. Suddenly, the natural reactions of her body were gone, as were the most familiar parts of her. Every contour had been replaced, every motion reworked, and as she stumbled from the bed where she had woken, Mother shook her head and clucked softly.

There was no running away, especially since Mother was flesh and bone and in a body that was not utterly foreign. She scooped Construct up and carried her deeper into the den, whispering all the while, "Mother has you. Mother has brought you home."

Sleep escaped her that night, as it has every night since. She no longer needs it, and Mother seemed to know that. In the days following, as Construct learned to make use of her new body, Mother set her to work guiding the other lost children home.

That was what Mother called them, the dragons who'd strayed from her care. In her den, they had been looked after, fed and protected and kept safe from all harm under Mother's watchful eye. Construct was only the first of many that Mother had been reunited with, even if she couldn't remember Mother's love from before, and as a result, it became her duty to return the wayward sheep to the fold.

She went out during the night to find Mother's runaways, and to find food for them all. Most were children, and many were lost and alone, as Mother predicted they would be. She seemed to see everything despite the way she confined her existence to the den, and when she predicted one of her children could be found wandering the Scarred Wasteland, she was usually right. In fact, the only thing she was wrong about was how grateful her children were supposed to be. Construct herded a great many home in hysterics, blubbering about some other family, some other mother besides the Mother they shared.

But she thought little of it until Mother started to change.

At first, rounding up her siblings was an occasional matter; Construct mostly searched for food to keep herself and Mother alive. But then it became Mother's priority, her greatest demand. When she sent Construct into the wastes, she no longer predicted where the children would be. Instead, she ordered Construct to take what she could get. Dragons were to be injured and offered a place to heal under Mother's wing, and hatchlings were to be plucked from the nest before imprinting on any other dragon. Mother wanted more, and she wanted what was not hers.

Construct cannot live like this anymore. In fact, she is not certain she lives at all save for by Mother's cruel design. Her heart does not beat, her blood does not flow, and she requires little sustenance to go on. She feels pain, though, especially pain of the emotional sort. Every cry of a hatchling separated from its parents pierces her heart, and the confused fog of healing dragons, still caught up in the haze of Mother's magic, leaves Construct weak, drained.

This cannot be right. This cannot be family, not if the families Construct has stolen from are any indication. It is an abomination, and it must be stopped, no matter the price. And if it costs Construct her almost life to undo Mother's wrongs, so be it.

No one else need suffer.
