TRIDER

The dull roar of the tide against rock roused a small Fae from her sleep, and a small blue head popped out of a hole in the cave wall. She yawned, flexed her crests and limbs, and clambered out of her nest, scales awash with the faint light of a seaside dawn. Stretching her limbs, she yawned again and crept to the mouth of the cave. Trider squinted into the sunrise, surveying the weather. It was difficult to make out whether the soft mass beyond the horizon was rainclouds or not but after last night's ominous scry, she didn't want to risk getting caught in a freak storm. Instead, she retreated back into her cave and towards her hidden larder. Her morning feed was leisurely, unlike the mornings where she'd scoff pawfuls of insects and anchovies before grabbing her net and diving into the roiling waves to begin her work. Such respite was rare, and Trider enjoyed these breaks whenever they came along. With her morning feed done, she took a moment to bask in the sun's warmth and inspected the dwindling stockpile. Her crests drooped as she counted the last of the dried fish and insects. The remaining stock would last her two days if she rationed, and she didn't fancy fishing when the weather promised rain and storm. Perhaps she'd have time to make a market visit today. Her stock of textiles needed some company too if she was to make progress on her latest work. It was decided, then. She clambered back into her nest, securing her money bag and a cape to keep the chill at bay. Heading to the mouth of the cave, the light revealed that the mass beyond the horizon was indeed a misshapen blob of grey clouds. Something trailed down Trider's spine and she involuntarily shivered. She didn't like the look of the clouds, but she couldn't place a claw on why. She was sure it was a sign, and after securing the bag with magic she raced towards the waves and leapt in, disappearing beneath the foam and froth. The clouds rumbled ominously, gathering in mass and deepening in colour. They waited for some unknown signal, seething impatiently. |
