Biography

“You can't see that one day...maybe ten years from now, maybe ten months, maybe tomorrow...you're gonna think back on right now and scream to the stars for mercy of death just so you'll not have to live in the wondering of what could have been.” - Rhys, Tales From the Borderlands (2014)

Name: "enthusiasm".

Rhys is the son of a pair of treasure hunters in the Starfall Isles named Tristan and Nia. The pair were not as well known as other wealth-seekers in the region, but still were more than capable of supporting themselves and their children. They were very supportive and loving, determined to give their hatchlings the best lives possible.

Rhys was sure he was a male from a fairly young age, and his parents were more than happy to seek out magic powerful enough for him to fully transition. As a result, Rhys never faced any major obstacles when it came to his gender identity or transition, and is forever grateful about that.

Less easy for his parents to accept were the markings that appeared on his body when he was a juvenile.

Neither of them had similar marks, nor did any in their family, and they had no idea what to make of it. They approached an ancient clan in the Observatory to ask for help. There, an ancient scholar examined the nervous young dragon and informed Tristan and Nia what their son was.

Rhys had been chosen by an ancient magic, one so old that even the Arcane scholar had no idea what to make of it. He advised the parents to watch over their son carefully; such magic can be useful, but is also often guaranteed to bring harm to those who use it. Keeping this warning in mind, they returned home.

Shortly after the visit with the scholar, Rhys’s magic began to emerge. When he went with his mother to learn how to forage for insects, he was startled by a snake. In his surprise, his eyes glowed a bright blue as energy shot from his mouth, completely flattening a nearby tree. Horrified, Nia grabbed her son and fled the scene before any nearby dragons could come to investigate.

Tristan decided then to try and teach his son how to control his magic. The lessons were difficult, as none in the family could even begin to understand the extent of Rhys’s abilities. Nonetheless, both continued to try, though most of their efforts were fruitless.

One day, Rhys lost control of his abilities after trying so hard to keep them in check. His mother had been sitting in on the lessons, Rhys’s siblings dozing nearby. Rhys was growing frustrated with himself, as despite his best efforts, once he thought about using his magic on the leaves his father presented, they were destroyed.

In his frustration, Rhys let out an angry growl and lashed his tail. Tristan noticed too late that the young dragon’s eyes were glowing softly again, and was hit directly with an intense burst of energy, knocking him away. Nia screamed and ran to her mate’s side, desperately trying to make sure he was okay. Rhys’s siblings watched him with a mix of anger and fear, and he himself was overwhelmed with horror and shame. How could he?

Rhys turned and fled away from the scene, stumbling as he went.
For a time, Rhys wandered Sornieth, until he made his way to the Sunbeam Ruins, and a clan located in the Hewn City. This clan was made up of ambitious, hardy dragons, and dominated the territory around them. Hyperion, they called themselves. The dragons of Hyperion had a reputation among their neighbors for being bloodthirsty and cruel, as unlike a Light clan as any.

When he came to the Hewn City, Rhys was exhausted and weak, collapsing at the borders of Hyperion’s territory. When he came to, he was in their medicine den, being seen over by a stern-looking snapper who didn’t even introduce herself to him. He was lucky, she told him, that Hyperion was so generous as to nurse a vagrant like him back to health.

From then on, the snapper rarely spoke to him. However, he hardly minded, as he had other, far more kind visitors. One was a mirror, smaller than any Rhys had ever seen, who timidly introduced himself as Vaughn before asking if Rhys was okay. Another was a long, sleek spiral who said her name was Yvette. The two had been the ones to find Rhys, evidently, and felt obligated to make sure he was okay. He was more than grateful for the attention, and eagerly awaited every visit the two made.

Another very memorable visitor was another pearlcatcher with a missing eye, who introduced himself as Blake. Blake wasn’t the leader of the clan--that title belonged to a stern, cold guardian named Tassiter--but he was a fairly high-ranking member, and was interested in why Rhys was there. He never showed much emotion or care for Rhys’s recovery, but was never outright mean to him.

Initially, Rhys planned to move on from Hyperion once he recovered. He couldn’t stay, not with such dangerous powers. Vaughn and Yvette wanted him to remain with them, and even Blake seemed interested in keeping Rhys with the clan, but he had made his decision.

All that changed the day Hyperion was attacked by one of its rivals, a Lightning clan whose name Rhys never discovered. Many dragons were killed on both sides, and much of Hyperion’s lair was destroyed. Rhys tried to take the opportunity to flee during the chaos, but stopped when he saw Vaughn be shoved to the ground by an enemy wildclaw.

He had grown attached to the mirror, and reacted on instinct at the sight of him in such danger. Rhys let out a snarl and charged the wildclaw, energy bursting from his open mouth in a bright explosion. The other dragon was blown off of Vaughn, and Rhys stood protectively over his friend. Pained and seriously burned but still alive, the wildclaw limped away.

In the end, Hyperion won the battle, but suffered severe casualties. Among those lost were Blake and Tassiter. A new leader, a headstrong nocturne named Jack, took power in the aftermath. He immediately set out rebuilding Hyperion and punishing the Lightning clan. Rumors spread that Jack had been the one to kill Tassiter, but they could not be proven. In the chaos of the clan struggling to rebuild itself, Rhys was accepted without question into its ranks.

Things were good, for a time. Vaughn and Yvette both promised to keep Rhys’s powers a secret, for he was afraid of banishment if they were discovered, and the three became close friends. They helped each other rise in the ranks, shared a nest, and spent as much time as possible with each other. Of course, this peace did not last forever, nor was it a good time for the clan. Jack only worsened Hyperion’s bloody reputation with his rash tactics and violent tendencies, completely destroying any clans or rogues he saw as a threat. Despite this, he was adored by his clanmates, many of whom practically worshipped him. Even Rhys admired him, though Vaughn and Yvette teased him endlessly about his little “crush”.

In the end, though, that couldn’t last. Jack was driven from Hyperion in another violent battle. Another clan, made up of mercenaries and treasure seekers, had had enough of him terrorizing and destroying the area and its dragons. Too many innocents had fallen to Jack’s claws, and this group knew they had to restore peace. Rhys saw none of the battle, as he and his friends were evacuated by higher-ranking dragons.

Even after his death, the worship of Jack continued. Hyperion refused to forget what it saw as its best leader. But, the clan had to move on, and a new leader took power shortly after Jack, a brash tundra named Saul. Saul was nowhere near as charismatic or effective in leadership as Jack had been, but he kept the clan together. Under Saul’s rule, Rhys rose in the ranks until he was effectively a second-in-command to the leader. Unfortunately, that, too, did not last.

In a brutal, swift coup, Saul was killed by a ridgeback named Hugo who wanted to become the next Jack. Hugo and Rhys had been rivals for a time, but until then the pearlcatcher had assumed he was harmless. After killing Saul, Hugo gave Rhys an ultimatum: give up his position and become one of the lowest members of the clan, or take the fall for the killing. By that point, Rhys had managed, somehow, to teach himself to have control over his abilities, and his answering snarl wasn’t joined by powerful bursts of energy. With a tooth-filled grin, Hugo told him that he made the wrong choice.

Within days, Hugo spread the word that Rhys had been the one to kill Saul, and exiled him from Hyperion. Vaughn stood up for his friend and accused Hugo of being a liar and a traitor, so he was given the same punishment. Yvette stayed quiet, acting like she didn’t care about the two so she wouldn’t be punished for associating with them. Hugo promised the two dragons that if he ever saw them again, he would kill them, and they left with their tails between their legs.

Rhys and Vaughn were on their own, wandering the Sunbeam Ruins. Vaughn suggested finding their way to the Viridian Labyrinth, his homeland, and Rhys decided that sounded as good an idea as any. So, they started on their way towards Dragonhome, hoping to find a route through there.

As they passed through the Tangled Wood, they found a pair of young nocturnes, crooks and thieves who made a living scamming clans out of their treasure and gems. Their names were Fiona and Sasha. At first, they tried to steal what little treasure Vaughn and Rhys had, but soon felt too bad to actually do so. They pitied these wandering dragons, and decided to take them under their wings.

It took time, but Vaughn and Rhys settled into their new lives with the sisters. Rhys decided not to show them his abilities, trusting only Vaughn with that knowledge. The two thought his markings were strange, but decided not to question it. As time passed, they grew fairly close and formed a new sort of family. Things were good, until Fiona decided to try and “trade” with Hyperion.

Hugo himself came to discuss trade terms with the sisters, and was shocked to find the two dragons he had exiled there as well. Sasha and Fiona didn’t know the history between them, so when Hugo began to growl, they didn’t know how to react. Rhys moved so he stood between the sisters and the ridgeback, snarling at Hugo to leave. Hugo smirked and reminded the smaller dragon of his earlier promise at his exile.

Hugo lunged at Rhys just as the pearlcatcher moved to retaliate, and Hugo’s jaws clamped down on Rhys’s right foreleg. He screamed in pain and struggled to escape, thrashing around, but Hugo didn’t let go. Vaughn and the sisters jumped and rushed to attack him, and only then was Rhys released. His leg was severely mangled, hanging limply. Rhys stumbled and struggled to right himself. Meanwhile, the battle with Hugo was not going well. The ridgeback, though he was small for his kind, easily threw their attacks attacks off him.

Rhys watched with wide eyes as Hugo stalked towards him again. He took a deep breath and carefully got to his feet, mindful of his injured leg. His markings and eyes began to glow a soft blue, his tail lashing in anticipation.

“Run!” he shouted to his friends as he stumbled over to Hugo and released the magic running through his veins. The force of it hit the ridgeback directly in the face, and he shrieked in agony. Sasha and Fiona watched in amazement, frozen in spot, while Vaughn was still getting to his feet.

Rhys turned away from Hugo and looked frantically to his friends again.

“Run!” he repeated. Vaughn shook his head, starting to protest, but Rhys nudged him gently. “Please,” he murmured, “you need to go.” With a shaky nod, Vaughn ran away. Fiona quickly followed, shouting for her sister, but Sasha paused.

Rhys began to run after them as Hugo continued screaming and pawing at his burning face. Sasha went with him, supporting him as he struggled to adjust to his injured leg. In the heat of the moment, they lost track of the others, and only found their way towards the heart of the Tangled Wood.

Rhys fell unconscious from blood loss very quickly, and when he awoke he and Sasha were in a warm, well-lit den, being tended to by a weary-looking skydancer. She introduced herself as Xactace, and apologized for the shock and confusion she saw on their faces.

The pair had been found by the Shadow clan of Allixestr, who immediately took them in. Quietly, Rhys asked Xactace if they had found Vaughn and Fiona, and flinched when she said they had not. He put his head down and cried softly, sick with worry for them. Sasha laid close to him and joined in, hoping desperately her sister was okay.

In the following months, as Rhys recovered, they found Allixestr welcomed them happily. They were embraced by this new clan, who implored them to stay. The pair decided that, for now, they would, at least until they found Vaughn and Fiona again.

Rhys keeps his powers secret from most of the clan, but a few have already found out. Magda, a peculiar wildclaw who quickly fell in love with Sasha, was first to learn, and after them was Dustpetal, an overzealous scholar, and finally, the current leader and her mate. He was amazed to find they weren’t afraid, only intrigued. Of course, only Sasha has ever seen him truly use his abilities, so Rhys supposes their lack of fear is understandable. It’s only a matter of time.

Sasha and Magda have become treasure seekers within the clan, bringing Rhys along on their various adventures. He does his best to keep them safe, but refuses to go anywhere near Hyperion’s territory. If Hugo were to find him again, he knows he’d likely suffer more than just a mangled leg.
