Berkanan is a Rune Mage, born a practitioner of a very ancient form of Earth Magic. Rune Mages are said to have the blood of the Earth itself running in their veins, which manifests as earthen runes glowing on their hides. Their magics take the form of Runes inscribed onto the rocks and stones about them. Though such Runes inscribed by an ordinary dragon would be inert, when etched by a Rune Mage they are capable of calling the magic of the earth to life. Different sigils can cause water to spring from the rocks, sound warning alarms when they are passed, or strengthen pillars so the slimmest of columns can bear many times their normal load. The magic of a Rune Mage is rarely 'flashy' but it endures, for as long as the rune remains etched onto the stone the magic will remain active. It is said that within the Cairnstone Rest there are active Runes that have survived many generations after the death of the Rune Mage that inscribed them
