Continued from Phorcys Part 1
Later that night, Phorcys and Calypso lay awake in their beds, their minds buzzing as they stared up to the ceiling.
They were going to have a baby brother or sister, maybe even more than one. When Lily and Moon had told them the news, the twins were excited, and they both had promised to keep that news a surprise for everydrake else.
But as the night wore on, their thoughts drifted back to the events that happened before.
Calypso turned over in her bed to face Phorcys lying in his. When he noticed her looking at him, he curled over to face her, too, both pairs of deep blue eyes filling with sorrow.
“Those other Spirals...” Phorcys began softly.
“...were they really...” Calypso answered, not daring to finish.
“...dead?” her brother barely whispered.
It must be true, but Calypso didn't want to believe it. A single tear rolled down her cheek and she sniffled. “And their bodies...” she broke off.
“...were being controlled,” Phorcys said, his voice starting to shake with dread. They'd both sensed magic of another being behind those other Spirals.
Did Lumiere know this? Was that why he sent the twins and everydrake else off in a hurry? But if he did know, why hadn't he gone after whoever was doing such a horrible thing?
The twins remembered the looks those Spirals had given them, especially Lucent. Their crooked smiles and flashing fangs...looking down on them with such intensity mixed with hunger.
But Dewlap had stopped them, and Lumiere had scared them away. But what if they came back?
A horrible thought suddenly struck them then.
What if those other Spirals came back and took their baby brothers or sisters?
The twins said nothing more to each other that night. Instead, Calypso covered her eyes with both paws and wept. Phorcys jumped from his own bed and hugged her tight, allowing his own tears to fall.
Had those other Spirals suffered before they died? The bodies bore no injuries, but Lucent's voice had been hoarse and gravelly. The other two, Zephyrus and Mort, hadn't spoken at all. And everydrake dazzled by their performances, including the twins, hadn't noticed anything wrong, until they nearly accepted Lucent's paw to be part of the show.
It was then, that they knew, that no soul had looked at them from behind those eyes. Dead eyes. Instead, terrible magic made its puppets dance and talk. For what reason or purpose, they didn't know.
Exhausted from weeping, Phorcys returned to his own bed and Calypso dried her eyes with her blanket. Before finally drifting off to sleep, their thoughts shifted back to Lily's news, and their tears ceased.
