“There you are!”
Lily darted up to the twin Spirals and Phorcys and Calypso were both embraced tightly. They hugged her back and buried their faces in her silky dress.
“So,” Lily started, “what was all the commotion out here?” she wondered, her bright-gold eyes shining. “Anything exciting?”
Phorcys and Calypso exchanged glances. Should they tell their mother what they had sensed from those other three Spirals? Would she believe them?
“It...it was...” Calypso began, her voice beginning to tremble.
“...fine,” her brother Phorcys finished for her, his own voice quiet.
Lily looked down at them both and sighed. “All right, I can see you're both exhausted. Is Lumiere pushing you too hard in your magic studies?”
“No, he's...” Phorcys began.
“...a good teacher...” Calypso trailed off.
But Lumiere had seemed to avoid their protests when they'd tried telling him what their sensitive magic detected...the wrongness of those Spirals performing just moments ago. Did the Imperial know something they didn't? Did he just not want to panic everydrake else?
Lily gave them gentle smiles and led them back inside the castle after the crowd of other dragons. “Why don't we head back and have some nice tea? Your favourite. Moonrise and I have some exciting news for you.”
As the dark Spirals headed back indoors and strolled the halls, Phorcys and Calypso wondered what their mother and Moon had in store for them, their sullen faces gradually perking back up.
Upstairs, Phorcys gave his sister a cheeky smile, flicking his claws once and a small burst of water splashed Calypso's face. Her brother smothered a giggle until a splash from her own claws got him back.
Lily glanced back, but before she could say anything, the twins shot into the air.
Phorcys and Calypso darted and twisted down the huge hall after each other, spraying blasts of water at one another as other dragons ducked out of their way. Except for Dewlap, who wore a harsh scowl on his pale face as he stormed down to Mudflat's room. The twins decided it was wise to stay out of the Nocturne's way.
Soon they reached their mother's room, and Lily caught up to them moments later and followed them inside, closing the door behind them. Moonrise was already there, pouring their tea and giving them all warm smiles when they seated themselves in ornate wooden chairs.
“You've probably been wondering why I've been going to see Aura and Alyss a lot lately,” Lily said.
Was their mother sick? That's usually the reason dragons here went to see either healer, but Lily appeared fine and happy.
Lily's round yellow eyes sparkled when she spoke again.
“You two and Whelk are going to have little brothers or sisters.”
