Tunnels Cast In Darkness
Born in the Scarred Wasteland to parents unknown to her, with no memory of her home or name, Scarecrow was whisked away to Dragonhome as a young hatchling. There, she was forced to enter the dark tunnels of Cairnstone Rest; tunnels so small, only hatchlings could fit. Together with others her age, she was forced to dig up precious gems and treasures for greedy masters, until her claws became broken and bent from the work. When she grew too big for the narrow tunnels, she was transferred to dig elsewhere, deeper and deeper into the earth, past tombs long forgotten, unearthing treasures from ages past.
Her eyes grew dull over the years, forced to spend her life in darkness, and her wings became weak, draping uselessly over her shoulders and back, the membranes torn and scratched from the stone. The years passed by, the tunnels became deeper and the treasures ever richer as Scarecrow and her fellow slaves kept digging, digging, digging, all day long. But the tomb’s residents did not bid them welcome.
From a young age, they were forced to face the horrors that lay beneath the earth all on their own. They learned to live with them, keep them in check, and never think too much about what lurked in the dark and stole one of them away with startling regularity. Soon it became their new normal -- this was the world they lived in, and they learned to live by its rules, as each dragon became their own closest ally. Forming bonds of friendship underneath the earth was foolish and only bound to bring grief -- or betrayal.
But eventually, the riches waned, the earth robbed from all the treasure it once held. But still they had to dig, now more than ever. Greed made their masters push them ever harder, dig ever deeper, in the hopes to unearth just one more precious gem or artifact, until one day, they dug too deep.

Escape
On that fateful day, Scarecrow managed to escape the darkness underneath. For the first time in years, the sun shone on her hide and warmed her, and she felt the wind in her mane and whiskers. Years underground had made her almost blind, and her legs and wings were too weak to carry her far. However, news about what had transpired at Cairnstone Rest soon spread, and groups of dragons came to help those who survived and free the surviving slaves from their underground prison, enabling them to start a new life as free dragons.
Scarecrow found shelter with Rufus and Tabitha, two archeologists who were most appalled when they found out about the illegal digging activities. They had long known about the digging sites at Cairnstone Rest, but had not known the foul truth behind it all. Terraclae became Scarecrow’s new home, where her legs gained strength again. Her wings, however, would forever stay weak, their development too stunted from the years spent underground.

A New Life
Eventually, Scarecrow left Rufus and Tabitha for a new home in the Southern Icefield. It was Saturn who first met her in Terraclae one busy afternoon, the streets filled with dragons eager to spend their hard earned treasure on the weekly market. He was about to buy something from a stand when she approached him and told him that he was getting scammed -- and from that moment on, a friendship blossomed between them that has only gotten deeper with the years. They spent the entire day talking and enjoying each other’s company, and met again on the following days. When Saturn left, he offered her to join his clan, and she agreed.
A few months later, she was picked up with all her belongings by Hawthorn and Io, and moved to the Cloudscrape Marauders’ lair, where she was offered a ground-level den to accommodate her. She refused, however, and instead moved in with Saturn on the 2nd floor, insisting that she would get around just fine. And get around just fine she did, and nowadays no-one would question her ability to do so anymore.
Over the years, she has earned herself a nickname -- Scarecrow --, a reference to her shaggy, somewhat frightening appearance and lifeless stare, but also her remarkable ability to scare away ghosts and other supernatural beings with her mere presence. It was Banana who proposed the name, as she was one of the few who recognized that hidden talent, and the name stuck. Most dragons don’t even know the name Rufus and Tabitha gave to her -- Ezekiel -- and just assume that Scarecrow is her given name.
Nowadays she spends most of her time helping around the clan wherever she can. This mostly includes looking after hatchlings and caring for mothers in the hatchery, as well as helping Persephone in her garden, but she will also gladly help with cooking meals for the clan. Despite being this engaged in the clan’s life, she has only few friends, choosing to spend most of her free time alone or with Saturn. Her only other friends are Venombreath (though really, they are more like acquaintances) and Hyperspace, who has recently moved to the Outpost.
Every now and then, she and Saturn will venture out to Dragonhome to visit Terraclae or the more recently established Colonnades of Antiquity. There, she seeks for treasures -- amulets, totems, and charms -- that only she knows the purpose and value of. Her collection is ever growing, and she keeps it on her body at all times, the pockets of her coat clinking and clanking when she moves about. The coat is a remnant from her time with Rufus and Tabitha, though it is not nostalgia that makes her keep it on, but the knowledge of the creatures that lurk in the dark, unbeknownst to most of dragonkind. But she has faced them head-on, and knows of their danger.

Her steps were slow, careful, almost nervous. It was still early – the sun hadn’t even risen above the horizon yet, and most of her clan mates were still soundly asleep. With every step, she got closer to her destination. She wasn’t nervous because of her destination, though – she simply didn’t want to wake anyone, especially not Ciel. His mechanical body and wild gaze that looked like he was planning something ominous freaked her out whenever she met him. Having to deal with a very angry Thunderbolt was also not a thing she was looking forwards to. Besides that, there were also the strange occurrences from last night … the memories were still fresh and frightening.
At long last, she arrived at her destination – a short hallway that branched off at her right. She peeked inside and listened – she could hear faint whispers and murmuring from Hyperspace’s and Venombreath’s den, but she couldn’t understand what exactly they were talking about. She entered the hallway, and as she did so, she could hear small noises – rustling and someone talking – from another den as well – the den she was walking towards.
Warm, flickering light shone from the den and into the hallway, and as she came closer, she could finally understand what its inhabitants were talking about. “I don’t know when I’ll be back yet - it could take a few days. Be careful and don’t let anyone go on your nerves, okay?” That was Saturn’s voice – she could hear him pick up some of his belongings, and then he barged out into the hallway. He came to an aprupt halt and flinched when he saw Banana – but as he recognized her, he relaxed and let out a sigh.
“Oh, it’s just you, Banana! You’re up early – are you planning to go on Scarecrow’s nerves again?” There was an unmistakable smile in his voice, but also amusement, and Banana could practically hear the impish look on his face without even looking at him.
“There’s something very important I have to talk with her about”, she simply said. “What about you? Whatcha doing?” She cocked her head with genuine curiosity, and her special ghost-detection goggles slipped from her head and made small clinging noises as they dangled around her neck.
“Barachiel ordered me to map the area around the Outpost as accurately as possible”, he sighed, all the joy in his voice now gone. “The earlier I start, the earlier I’ll be back. Speaking of which, I really have to go now, sorry! Take care!” And with that, he was gone, out into the great hall, leaving Banana behind without her even having a chance to say anything in return or wave goodbye.
The den in front of her was very quiet now, but the light was still burning and she could hear a faint rustling sound as Scarecrow was moving about in her sleeping place. Banana walked towards the entrance – a high stone arch –, knocked and peeked inside. “Hello? Scarecrow?”
“Banana?” Scarecrow’s voice surprised the wildclaw – it always did. She still wasn’t used to hearing that deep voice. “What do you want?” the pearlcatcher hissed. She made no effort to get up – she simply stayed in her sleeping place, which was made out of feathers and furs, her hind legs sprawled out underneath her. She was holding a piece of paper between her hands, and Banana could see that there was some text and a few crude drawings on it. Scarecrow bent over it, seemingly examining it with great care, and as she did so, her long grey mane fell over her eyes. Every other dragon would have been bothered by this - but not Scarecrow. She was almost blind, after all.
“Okay, so …,” Banana began. Scarecrow made a noise of protest as she heard the wildclaw enter the den without her permission, but Banana simply ignored it. “This night, my grandson called me. He said that for the past few nights, he had been hearing these strange voices – at first he thought it was the prisoners, but he soon realized that the voices didn’t match any of them. And … uhm, Scarecrow are you even listening?”
The pearlcatcher was still busy pretending to read, and she made small “Hmmmm” and “Ah” sounds as she did so. One of her ears flicked in Banana’s direction as she heard the wildclaw’s question. “Hm? Oh yeah. Yeah of course I’m listening. Something about weird voices, yada yada … keep talking.”
Banana narrowed her eyes and shot her an angry look before she continued, “I looked around down there, and thanks to my awesome ghost-detection goggles I was able to detect a very weird kind of aura. It’s very bright and powerful and seems to be extremely malicious. Seems to be a real big one, guessing from that aura, and I thought-“
“You thought what?” Scarecrow had finally turned her face towards Banana, but the look on it was completely unreadable to the wildclaw.
Banana intertwined her fingers and tried to look Scarecrow directly into the eyes. She miserably failed and instead looked at the wall behind the pearlcatcher, where Saturn had hung up a few of his big maps. Her gaze was wandering too fast for her to take in any of the many intricate details.
“I … uhm … I thought … you know, since you have so much experience with this ghost-stuff, and because you’re so unafraid …” Especially in comparison to me, she added in her head. She usually wasn’t afraid of ghosts or other supernatural shenanigans – in fact, she was usually fascinated by them! – but especially malicious ghosts and demons did make her nervous. “And you also know how to get rid of them! That’s why I thought that … you could help me? Maybe? Please?” She threw her best puppy-face at Scarecrow, despite knowing that the pearlcatcher couldn’t see it.
“Hmmm,” said the pearlcatcher. “Let me see.” She sat up, took the piece of paper from before, and pretended to study it very intently. Finally, she turned the paper so that Banana could see it properly, and pointed at an empty spot. “Sorry, sweetie, but my horoscope says no.”
A short moment of confused silence followed.
“SCARECROW!” Banana blurted out. “YOU DON’T EVEN READ HOROSCOPES!”
“I do now! Started doing so this morning.”
“YOU CAN’T EVEN READ!”
“Banana! How could you say something like that? That really hurts my feelings, you know.” Scarecrow got up, the piece of paper still in one hand, and made two steps towards Banana. “And now leave. Because you know, it also says here that small brats like you will get their ***** kicked if they don’t stop bothering old ladies.”
“You’re not that ol-“
“LEAVE!”
Scarecrow picked up her pearl and threw it towards Banana with great force – the precision with which she flung it towards the wildclaw was astounding and frightening at the same time. Banana barely managed to avoid being hit, and without another word she turned around and walked out of the hallways as quickly as she could.
”Boy, Scarecrow ain’t afraid of anything. It’s amazing how calm she is when faced with ghosts or other supernatural beings, and the staring contests between her and the local undead residents are legendary! Well, for the few of us who are initiated that is. Most peeps around here don’t even know just how darn haunted this place is. I just wish she’d like me more. She and I could become such a great ghost-hunting team! But instead she always pretends to be busy or tells me that her horoscope told her that she can’t help, or whatever excuse she can think of at that moment, so that she won’t have to spend time with me. Maybe one day I can finally convince her!” |
”Scarecrow always acts like she’s annoyed by Banana, but in reality she quite likes the young girl and often talks about her antics with me. She just really likes to tease her is all.” |
