Mottled sunlight cast its fingers through the canopy and across the guard platform above the main gate on the High Hill, where two Wildclaws dressed in armor looked into the darkness of the true thick of the forest beyond the gates. The one dressed in armor of red and black and gold leisurely stretched out his wings in the sunlight and pointed into the forest.
"And that one? The chopping cries of that flock of sparrows over there? You heard this one last week."
The pale shadow dragon by his side stared at him as if she was making a massive effort to not blow her temper. "I. Don't. Know. That. Lumifer." she replied choppily.
"Those sparrows are making the call for barkback boar. A sunder of them. And how far away are they?"
"Oh for cauldron's sake!" Under exclaimed. "How the HECK am I supposed to know that? I can't even tell them apart from all the other freaking birds in this place! We've done this for DAYS and my head is about to implode! Give me a freaking break already!"
"The answer is a little more than half a kilometer." Lumifer calmly replied with a cheeky grin. "And no, you're not getting a break. Bird language is a skill like any other. And if you don't keep it up, you've got about a lingonberry's chance in hell to actually get that guard job, regardless of what other talents you've got. And lets not even SPEAK on the permit to leave the lair on your own..."
"Freaking prison keepers..." the triple-white dragoness muttered and crossed her arms.
"Maybe. But better a prison keeper than a grave digge-"

Lumifer interrupted his sentence and sharply snapped his gaze to the northwest, nimbly leaped up onto the rim of the thorn-clad barricade, and stared out into the darkness.
"THAT." he said. "Is a sound you'd best remember."
"I... can't hear a thing." Under said hesitantly.
"Damn right. That's not a good sign. The alarm, now!" Lumifer hissed and flared his wings against the darkness.

Under darted to the thick rope that hung on the wooden wall an armsreach away, clutched it with both her paws, and put her entire weight onto it. A loud symphony of bells broke into life across the stretches of the lair grounds, strung up on ropes between the trees and causing the many Wildclaws on the ground and in the trees to instantly go silent. It was a drill they'd practiced many times before - some ushered obediently hiding hatchlings into the tree hollows, while most, with the silence of raptors on the wind, took to join the sides of Lumifer on the barricades. No one made a sound as the silence of the surrounding forest spread.

And then, a shadow in the forest. Something gleamed in the darkness, and the entire row of Wildclaws begun to hiss.

A shape the size of a Ridgeback exploded from the forest with an unnatural shriek and the speed of a well-shot arrow. It launched itself violently at the barricades and the pack was upon it in a well organized counter-attack before Under even had time to realize that the enemy was a spider.

Lumifers maws burrowed into the many, gleaming eyes of the creature, his mouth filled with the tastes of blood and salt, and the spider trashing madly to shake off its counter-attackers. He felt the energy of targeted spells and the spiders slowing movements as vines trapped its legs, and its collapse as thirty Wildclaws mobbed up upon it. The fight didn't take long.

A scouting party was sent into the forest. Health checkups quickly carried out. And then Lumifer stood, panting and covered with blood that was not his, in front of his chocked apprentice. "This. Under." he said and looked grimly at her. ".... is Beastclan interference. They herd these creatures at dragon lairs. And it's also why you're never, under any circumstances, leaving the lair on your own. Not until you can read the Shrieking."
