Tuka

Tuka is the clan’s sassy ever-efficient messenger, able to carry a wide variety of message types all across Sornieth and still make it home safely. Her messages mostly consist of letters to allied clans, but she’s delivered everywhere — to the harpy flock that raised Screechfang, to the blind and elderly tundra who adopted Skytail, to friends, to family, even to the Stormcatcher himself (although these would be intercepted by an intern).

She loves the travel. She loves seeing the sights. She loves showing off her elegant flying skills and speed. But the distances she has to travel often leave her exhausted. When she’s not off delivering messages to faraway places, she can usually be found asleep in a corner, trying to give herself the energy for her next run.

She’s also a bit of a snoop. If a letter is left unsealed — what, you expected her to just not read it? Preposterous! As a result, many dragons in the clan have taken to alternative methods of sending messages; many of the Tundras in the clan have learned to channel smells into a bottle to send a message. Tuka has gotten the hint and is trying to curb this habit, but so often, she just can’t help herself but to sneak a peek.

But above all, Tuka is loyal to her clan and her leaders. Cadfael has tried to tempt her with the promise of finding new ways to send messages, such as what he calls “electronic mail”, but Tuka continuously refuses. Her job may leave her wiped out and too tired to move at the end of the day, but she enjoys the travel all the same, the feeling of wind in her fans, and nothing beats the smile on a dragon’s face when an awaited letter finally arrives.
