THE WARRIORS

Dragons employed by the clan for the specific purpose of protecting and serving its members. It is a highly taxing job. The warriors are not awarded rest days, nor are they drowning in riches. In return for their work, they are simply fed and housed. Occasionally they receive gifts or treasure for battles fought; most of which gathers dust from a lack of time to spend it.

THE MAN HE IS

Of all warriors that have passed through the clan, Dolor may be the most perfectly suited yet for the job. Many would not even think to take on the task, but it seems no bother to Dolor. He patrols the clan's territory with pride, a healthy lack of self preservation, and a neverending thirst for blood. Truthfully, if it were not for the blood, sweat, and tears, Dolor would not know what else to fill his days with. It is all he has ever known, and in that sense, the clan has given him a purpose.

Every day, he is able to wake up without questioning what the day will bring. He is to patrol the perimeter, decide who is a guest versus who is an intruder, and take out anyone deemed as the latter. These instructions have remained the same for all the years he has worked, and every day he has executed them the same. His loyalty for the task is evident even at glance. His skin has been toughened by decades of scarring, his eyes glazed over with only partial sight remaining, and tears in the skin of his wings have made it impossible to fly without prosthetics. None of this makes him a worse warrior, rather it may be the very thing that scares off contendors before conflict even begins.

This version of Dolor is well known, and warnings not to face him have been heard across Sornieth.

Although Clan d'Orange always provides its warriors with food, it is often not possible for them to make it back to the clan. While completing a patrol route they may be away from the clan for as long as 3 days at a time. This required Dolor to scavenge and hunt on his own, albeit not for long.

On each of his hunts, Dolor would be met by a clan of dire hyenas who gladly cleaned up the last of his meals. This relationship evolved to a point where Dolor was seen much the same as any other member of their clan. They started hunting and eating together, to the benefit of both Dolor and the hyenas. Due to the nomadic nature of the pack, they also join Dolor for large stretches of his patrol, only fading to the background as he nears Clan d'Orange. Scavengers like hyenas aren't popular with dragon clans, and would sooner become dinner than seated as dinner guests.

At the edge of a wasteland, a warrior roams

Downtrodden robes, a man far away from home

The wind carries whispers,

"He who walks there, does not feel"

"He knows blood and pain, that it seems"

The taste of blood lay fresh on his tongue,

Yet again, another battle won

All the while,

He may think,

How nice it must be not to feel

Or carry the weight of history

THE MAN HE WAS

Eons ago, Dolor lived a life entirely diametric to the one he has now. Rather than ripping flesh straight from the warm bodies of prey, there was a time his meals were offered to him on freshly polished silverware. His robes were cleaned and hung up for him each day, and his armour replaced at the first scratch.

These were the days Dolor was King's Guard for the Leobel Kingdom of the Southern Icefields.

"Take the upper deck!" Dolor hissed at the knights.

An army of the kingdom's men rushed towards the top of the castle. Below them, the sound of screams boomed as the castle gate was breached.

The region had been unstable for years, but a total invasion certainly hadn't been foreseen. King Leobel hadn't been worried, often expressing that "those peasants have nothing on our men". The castle was equipped with an army in excess of a hundred men and an impressive artillery to match, but none of that seemed to matter on this day.

As Dolor ordered the last of the troops into position, the frenzied young tundra he knew as Chief Belholm finally arrived.

"I- I'm sorry sir!" he blurted, "I was trying to hold up the gate and-"

Dolor interrupted him by putting his hand on the tundras face, "No time Bel, have your troops guard the high ground now. Don't lose your position."

Dolor nodded his head at the tundra for what would be the last time, and then quickly slid away towards the King's chambers. He could organise troops all he wanted, but there was really only one task expected of him; keeping the King safe.

It was not only an obligation of duty, but a personal one. The King had taken Dolor in when he fled from his father, providing him with a security and comfort he couldn't have gotten elsewhere.

In return, the King asked Dolor for eternal servitude as King's Guard. And that he had given him, for nearly 15 years now. Dolor had developed a close personal bond with the King and his family, and could no longer imagine a life outside of the castle walls. That exact thought is also what's racing through his head as he rushes up the stairs of the castle keep.

"Your Highnesses, we're evacuating!" he yells as he reaches the top of the stairs and busts through the chamber door.

The King and Queen share a look of sheer terror. Even they knew that this time was different, but seemed in denial over this reality.

"It cannot be that we are losing. It simply cannot be!" the King begged.

"The castle gate has been breached, your Highness. The troops will not hold for long. It's over." Dolor responded.

The distant blood-curdling scream that followed left no further questions to be asked. The three other guards present in the room quickly gathered their weapons and ushered the Highnesses down the stairs. A bevy of commands are barked out as the group hurries towards the hidden exit past the dungeons. The narrow tunnel exit would lead them out from the bottom of the castle towards the wilderness of Snowsquall Tundra. The group floods into the exit one by one, as the sound of screams starts to die down. The incoming darkness of the tunnel is paired with a deafening silence from the group. It would then start to sink in that their life would never be the same again.
