HISTORY
Brought up as a warrior, Metalicana instead discovered that he enjoyed fighting and defeating other dragons. His clan elders had trouble disciplining him, and it wasn't long before he was forced out of the clan. This suited him just fine, for on the road, he was free of those pesky rules and regulations. He wandered the Southern Icefield for a time. There were a few occasions when other clans allowed him to join them -- either out of pity, for the Icefield is a harsh place to live, or because his strength and fighting skills were useful. He even managed to father three children during this time. But such was his disregard for others that he never bothered learning his offspring's names, and all the clans that took him on eventually expelled him again.

On his solitary wanderings, Metalicana gained a reputation as a bully and a brigand. He knew the wilderness well and was wily enough to avoid the authorities -- for a time. It got to the point where his misdeeds could no longer be ignored, however, and he searched for a way out of the Icefield. He acquired passage aboard a rather unsavory ship that was bound for the Sunbeam Ruins.

Metalicana decided it was time to move on to bigger things. The solitary traveler's life wasn't really for him; he wanted to find a clan. But he wouldn't be some lowly guard, always in danger of getting kicked out. He could find a small, weak clan and wrest control from the leaders, and then the remaining dragons would be obliged to serve him. When he disembarked at Sundial Terrace, he was delighted: the place was known for harboring fledgling clans. With his combat experience, it would be easy enough for him to defeat the leaders of any of these small, weak groups. He vowed that the first clan he encountered would become his home.

It was a vow that came true -- just not for the reason he'd hoped. He intruded on the Disillusionists' lair and issued his challenge, and was promptly trounced by Nachtstreiter, whose combat skills far outweighed his own. The clan nursed Metalicana back to health, questioning him closely all the while, and once he recovered, they pressed him into service, threatening to turn him in to the authorities unless he complied. He was given a job as a guard. This rankled him no end, an emotion shared by Alberge, a rebellious Imperial. Metalicana was relieved to find another dragon who hated the clan as much as he did, and he began considering Alberge an ally, if not a friend.

The Disillusionists kept close watch on Metalicana. As the years went by, he actually managed to settle into his job. Life as a guard was fairly quiet, and despite a few odd mishaps, nothing particularly inconvenienced him. He did notice that Alberge was growing more volatile, however. Something in him unsettled even the battle-hardened brigand, and Metalicana began distancing himself from the Imperial.

It was just as well. Alberge, under the Shade's influence, later unleashed his magic, almost destroying the lair. In the aftermath, Metalicana was interrogated, but it was soon determined he'd been completely unaware of the Shade's influence and designs. This significantly raised his standing within the clan. Metalicana himself was badly shaken by the incident, glimpsing in Alberge what he could have been, had he allowed his anger to continue festering.

CHARACTER
Metalicana was not born nice. Gifted with a natural flair for combat, he learned to enjoy beating his clanmates and was soon of the opinion that might makes right. He disliked adhering to rules and was always surly, rude, and disrespectful. Most dragons began giving him a wide berth and this, coupled with the fact that he managed to evade justice for a while, convinced him that he was destined for greater things. So he could hardly believe it when he lost to a small, then-unknown clan. Rather than rebel outright, he settled down to sulk and await opportunities for revenge. He wasn't very bright even then, however, and the worst he could manage was to continue being rude and surly. He managed to get along with the equally-dissatisfied Alberge, though truth be told, he always felt out of his depth with the Imperial (and, indeed, with anyone smarter than he was, which was almost anyone -- which, in turn, probably explained the perpetual surliness).

Metalicana continued having the rug pulled out from under himself several times as the years passed. He discovered he wasn't really one for magic and the supernatural and developed a fear of spirits. He began concentrating more on his work, seeing it as a respite from the crazier issues the rest of the lair had to deal with. The catastrophe with Alberge helped him realize how narrowly he'd escaped danger, and while his personality didn't change as drastically as Alberge's had, he did undergo a shift in mindset.

He remains curt and brusque and probably always will. He now avoids picking fights, however, and is likelier to break them up, stressing that arguments will get everybody into trouble. He distrusts all strangers on principle, particularly ones he perceives as smarter and stronger he is, taking the view that the trickier they are, the likelier it is that they're up to no good. This is another reason why he's fairly good at his job: He cannot often be reasoned with, and any attempts at trickery will lead to him shunting the problem to a higher (and keener...and more dangerous) authority.

He can often be found patrolling the inner lair, but only in the daytime. When he is off-duty, he continues honing his combat skills. He still welcomes sparring invitations, though challengers should be warned that he does not hold back. Aside from that, he also enjoys gossiping, though he would rather die than admit it. He often speaks without thinking, blabbing about the latest news and his own opinions to various lairmates. To his credit, he usually keeps his trap shut whenever there are strangers around.

His misadventures from his younger days remain a sore point for him. He still harbors some fear that he might be called back to the Icefield and clapped into a jail. So while he now has more opportunities to travel and visit his homeland, he does not often take them. He is also somewhat annoyed that some dragons keep lumping him in with Alberge's and the Shade's scheme and always insists, quite honestly, that he was never a part of it.

As far as relationships go, he and Alberge remain cordial with each other, though they still can't consider each other friends. A few dragons have expressed an interest in him, mistaking his bad attitude for mere gruffness, but he is no longer looking for relationships of any sort and is quick to send would-be suitors packing.

» NOTES:
  • Metalicana is not a fandragon.
  • Has no actual relationship with Dulindara. His children with her can be interpreted as flings with other dragons.

Not really weird, but fun. Because if I say Metalicana out loud, it’s MetalChicken in my language.

But when I saw Metalicana... I immediately heard a Metallica song (sorry. )! xD

RELATIONSHIPS
26537209p.png Alberge | Colleague
Metalicana has always been just a bit nervous of Alberge, and as it turned out, it was for good reason. While they still work together, they treat each other more civilly now and are considerably more loyal to the clan. Metalicana understands that Alberge has completely rejected the Shade. Nonetheless, he remains wary, because old habits die hard.
Longneck Scrapper Torvik | Familiar/Colleague
A young Longneck fighter hired out to the Disillusionists. Metalicana sees too much of himself in the hotheaded, reckless Torvik and doesn't hold back from telling him how stupid, ridiculous, etc. he is. Torvik is himself a Longneck of spirit and trades insult for insult. Despite their acrimonious working relationship, the two of them do get along, and will readily support each other in a fight.
27282420p.png Taljiwald | Former Stalker
Metalicana encountered Taljiwald on one of his earlier travels and formulated a plan to capture her. The plan backfired spectacularly when Taljiwald took to haunting him instead. He developed a phobia of spirits as a result, and while she doesn't torment him as often now, she still pops up from time to time just to remind him who's boss.

STATS & ABILITIES
combat1-7.png
Metalicana was a skilled combatant even before he came to the Disillusionists' lair. While he can cast some Ice spells, he prefers brute force and can overpower enemies through sheer strength alone. His weapon of choice is his trident, and he also receives assistance from his familiar, Torvik.
_______________________________________
vitality1-10.png
A remarkably bullheaded dragon, nearly impossible to put down. He can shrug off plenty of magical spells and never seems to notice when he's sick. Does well in all climates, but positively thrives in near-freezing temperatures.
_______________________________________
magic1-4.png
The only spells Metalicana knows are ones for combat, and they're not really very powerful on their own. He could learn further if he wished it, but he isn't patient or willing enough to do so.
_______________________________________
intelligence1-3.png
Is not as cunning as he likes to think he is, and it often shows. The language he understands best is violence, and when that isn't available, he'll mostly ramble about unimportant things, like gossip and complaints. Tends to be suspicious of whatever he doesn't understand, such as magic and dragons smarter than he is.
_______________________________________
charisma1-0.png
Doesn't know how to socialize, and really doesn't care. His cantankerous expression repels most dragons; the few who do manage to talk with him (or get talked at by him) find that he doesn't usually have anything of substance to say.
_______________________________________
luck1-5.png
Metalicana might admit that he deserves more out of life. Most dragons are inclined to mutter that he got more than he justly deserved, and that his only saving grace was that he recognized it in time.
