"The Curiosity of Hatchlings"
By Paintminion
KouMakani rolled over, shifting his tail up and around his nose as he curled up in bed. He felt a small breeze on his face, and he knew that smell. Hatchling. He wearily opened his eyes and found himself nose to nose with a small tundra baby, blueish so most likely belonging to his Lair pals Aramis and VelvetWind.
He blinked. And the Hatchling shuffled back with wide and awed eyes. He stretched, hearing the beginnings of breakfast preparation out in the main cavern. The Hatchling stepped back a bit further, and his eyes went even bigger as the adult wings swept out and up.
KouMakani brought his head down on a level with the young one, and asked, "Did you want something little breeze?"
The Hatchling's jaw hung open and it had a hard time getting its tongue to work but with intense determination, it finally spit something out that sounded like 'gurklemurkinder'.
"I didn't quite catch that little breeze, could you blow that past me again?"
There was an audible little gulp and the Hatchling breathed in deep, lifting it's chest and head up high. "Are you the Windsinger, Sir?"
KouMakani burst out in a huge laugh that echoed through the Lair. The hatchling pulled back it's head and tilted it in confusion.
"I am KouMakani, and Windsinger is in us all, he just shows through my colors more than yours...but I see him in you too." He said gently and with a comforting smile.
This was not the first Hatchling to have the nerve to ask the question. Usually after their teachers told the stories of the deities and particularly Windsinger. This Hatchling would be one to watch. It had strength and boldness on the inside, as well as a good dose of curiosity - an excellent trait in any of Windsinger's children.
He led the way to the Kitchen, where he saw a number of snickers and smiles directed toward them. Breakfast was a merry affair with the entire clan. When KouMakani rose to get to his chores for the day, the little Tundra followed him - all day - with a barrage of questions, still believing that KouMakani knew all about Windsinger.
At the end of the Day, KouMakani went to the cavern of Aramis and VelvetWind, the little Hatchling barely noticing that he had been brought home until his mother nudged him towards his siblings and their bed.
"Was he much trouble?" asked Aramis, as VelvetWind was whispering with the little ones and tucking them in.
"He will be a handful for you, but I like him. Fortitude and Curiosity to match. That one has a Destiny, I am sure." KouMakani winked at his friend.
Aramis winked back and then KouMakani left the family to their night time routines.
