It wouldn't be right to say you were adopted. They found your egg, sure... but they raised you from the day you hatched. You never once doubted that they were your parents, and they never once questioned that you were their son. You were as loved as any hatchling could hope to be. You were loved even when your... "difficulties" started to surface.

Your clan was superstitious. At first, they thought you a medium, one who could commune with the dead. But as your thoughts turned darker, they began to fear for your health, and travelled across the realm to visit a well-reputed medical doctor in the Sunbeam Ruins. He tried to heal you, only to find that there was nothing there to heal.

Why, then, did the darkness plague you so? If it weren't spirits and it weren't a fault in your brain, what was it?

They crawled and clutched at the filaments of your mind. They ripped and tore with claws and teeth, they drew out and stuffed in and switched around. Oh, how they lurked just outside your range of sight. Your vision was fogged around the edges by something so much deeper than shadow. You walked through a tunnel, bordered on all sides by an abyss so desolate that even darkness could not apply to it. It wasn't black. It wasn't an absence of light. It was a nothingness so absolute that you knew, deep in your core, that no matter, object or idea could infringe on it - and never would.

And it whispered to you. All manner of things... of secrets, of knowledge you could not comprehend, of ideas you could not bear to fathom. Always, for as long as you remember, it was there. Just over your shoulder, singing softly in your ear. Sneaking poisonous ideas into your mind. Push them back, some part of you said. Ignore them. Stuff them in the furthest corner of your mind and forget them. And you did.

It usually worked. It almost always worked. Except for the one time that it didn't.

It was just an... idea. A stray thought. It made you sick to the stomach, but still you couldn't help but ponder it, just for a second. And then, for a minute. For a minute, your body slipped from your control. For a minute, the void that followed you seeped into your flesh, and you hung like a puppet on its strings. For only a minute you were lost, but a minute was all it needed.

You loved your parents, and they loved you. Worst of all, they trusted you. Despite all your troubles, they trusted you. Oh gods, why did they have to trust you? Why did this happen?

Why did you do it? Why did you do it, child? Why, why, why?

Everything became a blur, after that. The void's appetite was sated, but it was stronger now. You could feel it crawling through your muscles and watching through your eyes. You knew it could do it again. You were just waiting for it. Always on edge, always afraid. But it never did.

Most dragons avoided you; they could see the not-darkness in your eyes. You were glad. If you were alone, you were safe... surely. How much time slipped by, with you lost in that unfeeling stupor? Weeks? Months? Years? Or was it only a few days, drawn out by anguish?

You were incoherent, terrified, helpless. You were only barely aware of what was happening around you. Some dragons, passing by, noticing you. Some unintelligible voices. Strange noises, strange lights, a strange burning in your skin.

And then- then, you woke up. You were mostly alone, except for a pearlcatcher who watched over you. She glanced at you from the corner of her eyes, and you felt a kind of resonance that made you want to empty your stomach. But, despite that, you couldn't help but feel like a weight had been lifted.

The other dragon looked away, but spoke; "You're not the first we've seen, and you'll probably not be the last. It's waking up. Most of them don't see it, but we do. We've felt it. It still has a grip on you, just so you know - but it's weaker now. Trapped in the deepest recesses of your mind. You're free, kid. As for what you do with that freedom... that's yours to decide."

Then she got up, and left. And you remained, alone, to explore your newly-unchained mind. To ponder all you'd done. To try and make peace with it. To figure out what to do with this freedom you'd been given, by strangers, for no cost and with no questions.

It was a freefall, and your stomach lurched again at the thought of it. But you looked down the trail the pearlcatcher had walked down, and felt the sun on your wings and heard the sounds of life around you, and you thought - you'd have to find your way. You'd have to be a bit lost for a while. But... that was okay. You didn't mind. Maybe you were even a little eager.

You cried for the ones you'd hurt, but you forgave yourself in time. You forgave yourself for all those dark thoughts and all the lost time and all the bad decisions. You started a new life, and you lived it well.

It's still hard, if you look back into the dark lands you came from. It still lingers in your peripheral vision, just out of sight. It lashes its barbs and hisses through the bars of its cage. It is so very angry. So very, very hungry.

But you're okay. You'll get by. It has no hold on you now.
