Biography

Frostscale's avatar
tumblr_inline_nbax4xlrxv1qg78ij.png

As a young dragon, Frostscale was the subject of a cruel experiment done by criminal scientists in the Plague Flight. Their goal was to develop a serum that could transform a dragon's hide to the color of its surroundings like a chameleon. But they could only know for sure if their formula worked if it was tested on a live dragon subject. The imperial hatchling was kidnapped from his lair in the Tangled Wood and brought to the scientists. They all soon learned that the concoction was faulty as soon as it was injected into the dragon. As soon as they saw him writhe in pain, they knew what they were doing was wrong. The young dragon and other evidence had to be disposed of. They shipped it away in a cargo box to the Abiding Boneyard, where no one would ever know it existed. But Frostscale was still alive in that box.

The imperial broke free of the wood and crawled away to a new life. As it turns out, some of the serum did have effects other than extreme pain. It gave Frostscale the ability to change his body's color at will, but only to the opposite color of his surroundings. In a dark cave? He could turn himself to a bright creamy color. Outside in a thicket? Now he could become red. But Frostscale's main color he kept was a bright cyan color; he liked to stand out and be noticed in a good way, not as a faulty experiment.

@LunarFlower (I had so much fun writing this! I hope it's not too out of character for Reality ^^; )

(For the sake of this, we'll pretend that Veilspuns are similar in size to Imperials, just a few meters shorter on average, since I honestly can't picture them being as tiny as they are canonically-)

The night was serene, much calmer than anything Frostscale had experienced before in his travels. The large Imperial gently padded through the bamboo forest, never making a sound. The reeds sang softly in the breeze, the bamboo opening up to small clearing with a babbling stream, and upon one of the large river rocks sat a Veilspun, a bright sigil beneath them, their runes pulsing in the soft moonlight. Frostscale was enamored by their silent beauty, how they seemed completely at peace in this midnight reprieve, how they simply glowed with a radiance he had never seen before.

He swears that it felt like hours he gazed longingly at this beautiful dragon, though it was only a few seconds before they glanced back at him, saying, “Why hello there, I don’t believe I’ve ever seen you before.”

Frostscale startled backwards, feeling a cold chill run through his scales as he was snapped out of his trance, “I’m sorry to disturb you, I don’t wish to cause any trouble-”

The Veilspun laughed, a soft purring sound, “You’re not bothering me at all, though I have to ask, why did your scales change?”

Frostscale looked down, his scales now a creamy white instead of his usual cyan, sighing, he willed them back, “It happens when I’m startled sometimes…”

“Ah, very interesting,” The Veilspun stepped closer to him, looking at him from nose to tail, “I have to say that the cyan definitely suits you more than that other color, it’s quite dashing.”

Frostscale could feel the blush rise to his muzzle, his scales starting to shift again, “Thank you,” he muttered out, embarrassed.

The Veilspun, patient as ever, simply smiled, “And do you have a name, my ever-shy Imperial?”

“F-Frostscale,” he glanced away from the Veilspun, his heart hammering in his chest, “What’s your name, my ever-mysterious Veil?”

They grinned, pleased at Frostscale’s attempt to match their quip, “It’s Reality.”

“Reality,” he repeated, testing the name on his tongue, “What a beautiful name for a handsome dragon such as yourself.”

Reality trilled with delight, the excited sound ringing in Frostscale’s ears, “Oh, how you flatter me!” Reality turned, moving back towards the stones, “Would you care to join me?”

Frostscale nodded, taking a seat by them, watching as their runes glowed once more when they stood over the sigil. “What is it that you’re working on?” he found himself asking, “Is it some kind of magic?”

Reality nodded, sighing wistfully, “Ah, it’s just a passion project of mine,” they gestured with their claws, trying to find the words, “It’s quite silly though-”

“I’m sure it’s not,” Frostscale quietly interrupted, “If it’s something you enjoy doing, then it’s not just some ‘silly’ thing. If it was ‘silly’, you wouldn’t be doing it at all.”

Reality paused, looking up at the Imperial with curiosity, “Then what if I said it allowed me to go to a different world, a different universe even, one that I could change my form in or my consciousness?”

Frostscale looked at them with a knowing look, smiling gently, “Then I would say I understand what it’s like to want to change how I am physically and mentally, to want others to perceive me as something else entirely, and I would see you no differently for desiring such a thing either.”

A violent pang ripped through Reality’s chest; this genuine validation, from a borderline stranger nonetheless, spoke so honestly that it made them want to cry a little. It left them to wonder what this Imperial had seen to make him relate to such a sentiment at all.

“Are you alright, Reality?” Frostscale leaned in closer, concerned by Reality’s stare, “You seemed to fade from me for a second.”

Reality rubbed their eyes, looking up at Frostscale with a small smile, “I’m fine, thank you. Your words just surprised me is all.”

“It was a good surprise though, right?” The imperial picked at their claws nervously.

“Yes, it was,” They stood up, laughing as Frostscale’s ears perked up from their words, as they started gathering their belongings, “My home is not too far, would you care to spend the night? I have plenty of room there, that is,” Reality paused, “if you have no other plans.”

Frostscale’s scales quickly changed through a myriad of colors before settling back on cyan, his mane bristling with excitement. “I was actually looking for a clearing to rest when I stumbled upon you, so I’d enjoy staying in your home, if it’s not too much trouble?”

Reality trilled again, Frostscale finding the sound endearing, “Not at all, my Frostscale, a bother is something you never are.”

Frostscale hummed, a deep rumbling purr, as he followed Reality home, his heart fluttering with excitement.

So, my Reality,

67526282_350.png

and your Frostscale,

24475299_350.png

Reality’s heart fluttered as they flew across the fields with the handsome Imperial at their wing. Reality glanced over at Frostscale and was in awe. His large wings glided effortlessly through the still evening air, and his cyan scales shone under the light of the moon. Reality was so entranced that they almost flew right past their home. Reality dove down, with Frostscale following their lead. The two landed in front of the small cottage.

“It is not much, but it is home.” Reality said, motioning for Frostscale to follow them into the garden area.

“Your home is lovely.” He replied, admiring the diverse array of plants. “Do you use these plats for anything?”

“Some are used in spells, some are for tea, and some.. well, they’re pretty, like you.” They said, “Feel free to look around, I have to set some things up inside.”

Frostscale flashed their handsome smile that made Reality’s heart jump to their throat. He turned to peruse the plants as Reality slipped inside. They immediately began collecting the scattered papers and shoving them into a box and the box under the stairs. They rarely had company, so rarely cleaned. They hastily shoved any remaining mess under the couch just as the Imperial opened the door.

“Please excuse the mess.” They said.

“Your home is quite lovely. M-much like you.” He said, glancing around the room before his eyes settled on Reality.

Reality felt their cheeks flush under his gaze. “It is quite late, I unfortunately only have one bed, but you are quite welcome to it.”

“Oh no! I would not want to impose like that. Where would you sleep?”

“You would not impose, I could sleep on the couch.” They replied, glancing around, “Though… It is rather uncomfortable… and the bed is quite large… plenty large enough for two dragons. I-if you don’t mind, t-that is.”

Frostscale’s scales ran through a myriad of colors as they stammered at the offer. Reality grinned and turned away, setting a pot of water on the stove to heat for tea. All while internally freaking out at their own boldness.
