Relius was a strange child in the eyes of his parents. First was the fact that he preferred the comfort of servant’s clothes to the finery of a lord. Next it was the fact that he was content to roughhouse outside with the common children rather than sit in fancy gowns and learn to sew (this made more sense to them when Relius announced he was a boy).
Even after his announcement, after the pieces fell into place, Relius still had oddities about him. When his father decided it was time for him to be trained in the ways of a lord, Relius begged to be anything else. His father still trained him regardless. Relius sat through lesson after lesson in front of old maps and yellowed books listening to boring lectures about dead kings. When his father deemed him ready to learn swordplay was when the real excitement began.
Finally, Relius had found something he was meant for. The heft of metal and rush of adrenaline; Relius wasn’t sure if he’d ever be able to do anything else.
Back in his classes, Relius grew antsy. His parents, finally realizing this wasn’t for him, gave up on trying to teach him. Now that he was free of it, he asked, yet again, to be trained to fight. When they didn’t listen, he agreed to train as a tailor, something a little more befitting of his status. He was sent off to auction, to sell his tolerable skills as an apprentice.
While living in the Auction House, he met Baskor, a boy his age also looking for an apprenticeship, though he hadn’t decided what for. The two became fast friends, and vowed to stick together no matter what, even if it meant turning down offers. Because of this, they sat in the House for much longer than expected.
One day, when Relius and Baskor had all but given up on getting out, two dragons entered the House. One of these, a young red Guardian a little older than they, took interest in them. She convinced her mentor to take them home, and the pair finally escaped.
On the way to their new home, the red Guardian, introduced as Calla, asked who they were. Realizing this was his chance, Relius finally claimed his role as a soldier.
Navi took Relius under his wing, teaching him how to fight in the messy way of common dragons as opposed to the formal style of a lordling. Relius enjoyed this new combat style immensely, enjoying the informality of the act. Where he found difficulty was overestimating his size and strength. Navi tried to teach him to use his size to his advantage, slipping under a larger dragon to attack their soft underbellies. Relius tried his best, but he often found himself barreling into a fight only to find himself vastly outranked. However, the one time he actually sized up his enemies correctly was the day he found himself in the most trouble.
Relius often tagged along with Baskor on his way to and from Baskor’s market stall. A merchant always needs someone to help protect his goods (Relius definitely doesn’t make excuses in order to hang out together). They were heading home after a successful day at the market when Iy and Dianwirnin rose from the forests below. The pirates demanded their treasure and items. Relius refused to allow Baskor to listen. Iy was the aggressor, and he was confident he could take her.
In a fair fight, he would have been correct.
However, her claws extended her range, and the tips were dipped in poison. She was also considerably faster than him, so he was quickly thrown to the forest floor. Baskor surrendered his goods to save him, but wasn’t quick enough to stop Iy from tearing apart his arm. Barely surviving the trek home, his left arm was amputated as the only way to stop the spread of the toxin.
His life changed completely, forced to give up as a guard or otherwise completely relearn how to fight, Relius has struggled to find a new purpose. However, he has gotten an excuse to hang out with Baskor more, so losing an arm isn’t all bad, right?

Relius !! chronic stupid?? big mood. ive been very much into blue lately so he was an easy pick. layering the koi armour over the raiments is a really nice apparel trick. makes him look elegant with a swordsmaster's poise. i do admit caribbean toxin was difficult to like but as i kept looking at him, no other gene would be as fitting. the hints of coral are a great contrast to his splashes of blues.
