They are rarely seen, and commoner and priest alike consider a sighting to be a good omen.
The patron Spirit of Cerar Oriya, figurines depicting Haar Hettyc Cerar are a common sight in both household and crossroad shrines. Engineers often invoke their guidance when restoring the rusting bowels of the City’s pipeworks, and everyone knows that it is by the Spirit's grace they are permitted to reside in the sacred caldera. Regular expression of gratitude to the Spirit, both informal and ritual, are widespread among the population of Cerar Oriya regardless of social status. - - - Devotees of Note: Tihaar | Cuyan | Tayli Ruyot | Nehutyc No pronoun preference recorded
[ CERAR ORIYA: THE MOUNTAIN CITY ]
The city has many names. Rival kingdoms call it the Unyielding Citadel, for many armies have come to nothing on its steep slopes. The poets call it the City of Glass, for the obsidian that lines its walls. But those who live there name it Cerar Oriya, Mountain City, and that is the name that can be found on most maps. The Mountain City rises high above the lands surrounding it, dwarfing the smaller foothills that roll away into the dark woods beyond. The soil is good, and generations of dragons have carved terraces into the slopes to form fertile fields to feed Cerar Oriya. Hunters must fly much farther afield, and in order to supply the city’s population with the high volumes of meat required, the Crown has made trading alliances with the local Centaur herds. While many societies are segregated by element, the Mountain has always welcomed dragons of all breeds and elemental affinities, so long as newcomers place Cerar Oriya above any obligations or alliances they may have held before. The Mountain City is a harsh place, and does not tolerate disloyalty. Legend has it that the first lair was dug into the walls of the caldera not long after the birth of dragonkind, when landscape was harsh and forbidding and the caldera still bubbled. The Crown claims direct descendance from those first brave families, and the palace is built high on the inner slope of the crater, at the location of that first lair of the forefathers. The City Guard would have the Crown move to a more defensible place deeper into the city, but royalty is stubborn, and prefers tradition and appearances over more practical concerns. The land is at peace and always has been within living memory, and there is no reason to upset the order of things. Beneath the palace that sits proudly on the upper slopes is a sprawling temple complex. Though the temple of the Shadowbinder is most prominent, the Flamecaller’s disciples also enjoy great respect within the city, for they maintain that it is only by their devotion to their deity that the slumbering volcano does not reawaken and destroy the inner city and all surrounding it. Temples to the remaining deities have their own devotees, but have nowhere near the political power of the first two. In a rare concession to the City’s Centaur allies, there is also a small temple reserved for the beastclans’ use, who are not permitted into the main temples. Whether they worship the elemental deities or some strange foreign gods, the dragons do not know, and do not much care. Below the temples, the caldera widens and descends deeper into the mountain. Here is the residential center of the city, and as the high open peak gives way to encircling darkness, the homes become smaller and less grand. Lairs can be found perched on the walls or dug deep into the earth; often an extended family grouping will claim large interconnected warrens, with the clan leader claiming the exterior lair. Though the City has been inhabited continuously since very near the dawn of dragonkind, it is vast, and there are always new lairs under construction, or old ones being enlarged. Towards the bottom of the city, where the walls of the crater meet its floor, the sun shines only for a few hours each day. Here the shopkeepers sell their wares; guildhalls, inns, and prominent places of business claim the walls and vertical spaces, while the floor is a riotous jumble of temporary stalls, the ever-shifting squares and marketplaces filled with exotic goods and travelling merchants. Anything can be found at the Floor, for the right price. The City Guard does its best to police the chaos, but it is trivially easy for a savvy merchant to slip away and simply set up shop elsewhere. The labyrinth of tunnels beneath Cerar Oriya give ample room for a thriving black market, and some in the Guard, resigned to the inevitability of stamping out the City’s dark underbelly, have instead decided to take its coin and turn a blind eye to certain goings-on. At the very center of the Floor rises a secondary crater, and the dragons of Cerar Oriya have carved this crater into an Arena. Rings of seats carved into the stone surround a central pit, webbed over with thick netting to prevent the combatants inside from flying out. Here condemned criminals, wild beasts, and young warriors eager for coin fight to the death for the amusement of cheering crowds. The Arena is also used for ceremonies, such as the coronation of a new monarch, or the final celebrations during the high holy days of the Eleven. | @@ |
