With her low, campfire-story voice, Merle has a way of capturing attention and not letting go. She is born to the life of a a jester, a fool, a voice to speak all the ugly truths there are — and for no one to heed. She is the watchman and the canary in the coal mine, disposable, invaluable. Without the likes of her, no empire could stand. Her doom is for her every warning to fall on deaf ears. For she is unshakable, and as long as her king lives she is invincible.

In this Merle takes refuge, a narrator not a fighter, voicing what she sees. When others see her as flippant, malicious or even cruel, she knows that her words are empty anyway. Who will hear? When she was young and wondering, all she wanted was to be listened to. But she's beyond that now. She sees now that her king needs her as much as she needs him, and Merle is the spark that has kept both of them going through toil and hardship. And she fixes her eyes in the distance, and pulls herself along, one joke and laugh at a time.
