the way mahiru's past is spoken of amid the local rumor mill presents her as an intelligent (if foolhardy) young magic student, with a penchant for disobeying her teachers. blessed with keen magical prowess and always the overly curious sort, mahiru had a tendency of charming her way into the “forbidden books” section of the library, located within the sorcery academy she attended. the scheme was less for plain rebellion and more so out of genuine interest for the obscure magic that lay hidden there. (although that’s not to say mahiru wasn’t slightly entertained by the act of affronting authority. it just was, as it happens, a pleasant side effect.) much too fascinated to leave the matter be, mahiru studied the dark and long forgotten sorcery spoken of in the ancient tomes. on one particularly brazen stint, she performed a ritual that went horribly awry- thankfully, while she wasn’t harmed, she soon found that her physical form had reverted to that of a younger hatchling’s.

with her young adult mind still intact, however, mahiru was surprisingly ecstatic to have produced such a powerful effect, even when the academy eventually expelled her for her insolence. yet, not one to be discouraged, mahiru continued her studies in the way of dark sorcery. although a path that tends to garner a distasteful reputation, mahiru is no villain. she merely prefers to play by her own rules. and, as she still remains a formidable mage even in a much smaller form, there’s rather little to stop her from doing so. after all, dark sorcery and witchcraft is described as such for a reason.

nowadays, mahiru has taken up ownership of a fairly large bookstore, stationed in the bustling town just nearby songbird keep. as a dragon known for being a bit of a bookworm, such an occupation is a excellent use of her time. granted, it does have a tendency to startle the customers when they witness a skydancer hatchling speaking and spell-casting with all the maturity of a well-seasoned sorcerer. her bubbly demeanor and talkative nature quickly make any client feel at ease, however. mahiru adores seeking out new knowledge, magical or otherwise, so any traveler that steps in for a chat will surely be met with a myriad of inquiries on their adventures. that, of course, and a cup of tea. her bookstore has garnered a reputation of having an odd (albeit warm) brand of hospitality for good reason.

╭━━━━━━━━━╮

notes:
- best girl best girl
- has big "then perish" energy
- she loves hearing about people’s interests!! no matter how obscure or common, she’s a great listener
- dark cottagecore/academia aesthetic
- she lets visitors to her shop take books to read in-store, but if they damage them there will be Consequences
- not evil at all but. she'd probably steal bones or something for a ritual with zero (0) remorse whatsoever
- owns very many footstools. some of those shelves are high!!
- extremely confident for someone who isn't taller than most dragon's knee height
- a not terrible baker, if you ignore her tendency to “accidentally” bake enchantments into her goods
- she inherited the bookstore through a family member and figured it'd be a neat place to live/work
- voice claim: mahiru koizumi from danganronpa 2
