To a gravekeeper, all is lost but the somber tone of endings. The dead sing no songs, light no fires, and fuel only passionate grief. Thanatos has carried that same grief long enough that his shoulders bow under eternal weight. His voice rasps from disuse, as corpses tend not to be popular conversationalists.

Thanatos has found sanctuary in his quiet work. He knows that his patients find no enjoyment in his care, but he painstakingly sews them together, a facade of life, before settling them into the ground for final rest. The dead, he thinks, must find comfort in something.

With the living, he tends to their wounds before they can become fatal. He dispenses sound advice but rarely has the chance -- his clanmates often flee right after his work is done for fear his dreadful career might be contagious. He secretly delights in Nemesis’ company whenever she comes in with a wound and often finds himself excuses to have her over for tea or chess. Yet, Lucius avoids his presence - whether it is from abhorrence or merely disinterest is not quite known.

There is, however, the problem of the mask.

It never comes off.

Ever.

His visage strikes a moment of astonishment from strangers before they see him for what he is: soft tempered and wistful. For who is more a companion with death, if not the keeper of the grave?
To him, there is always the mortal hourglass, fragile and well-greased, and he is there to count each grain of sand as it falls.

Undertaker, string us a song,
Of flesh and bone,
Along the lines of stitches,
For ours has long ended.

Undertaker, we know you.
You dig your grave slow
In case the dead
Decide to live again.

The yard is alight with flowers,
And names in stone.
Here, we hope for nothing
Except for the comfort of our coffins.
