Once, long ago, I was beautiful. Female dragons would compete with each other in hopes of impressing me. I was a second in command, tasked with patrolling the borders for dangerous rogue dragons and invading beastclans. Many of the clan members looked up to me, and I enjoyed my position immensely. One day I hoped to find a mate, have children, and teach them to follow in my footsteps. My future was secure – or so I thought. Alas, I had not foreseen the incredible jealousy of the leader. He had given me my position because he considered the task of patrolling tiresome, and had not predicted how popular it would make me. It became clear that I was a favorite among the clan, perhaps even more so than himself. He began to fear that I might grow so powerful, so loved, that I would scorn his leadership and take his place at the head of the clan. I would not have done so, for I was happy where I was. But he did not give me a chance to speak for myself. He had other plans for me. |

When I awoke, I could see that I was being held in a cave with the sound of a stream running nearby. Although I could barely move, I could feel that I was covered in bandages and paste. A rough female voice was commenting on my condition. “He's an interesting case – he should be dead. Bones sticking out, torn wings, exposed skull...he's lasted longer than any of our experiments.” I flinched as I felt something being applied to my ribs. Another female voice said something, but I could not make it out. I was already drifting back into unconsciousness. The second time I awoke, I was able to stand. Two female imperials observed me silently, one with green scales and the other white and crimson. Introducing themselves as Anaideia and Styx, they quickly informed me of my situation. In a voice void of any sympathy, Styx explained, “We've done the best we can. Your hind leg will not get any better, and your face is as good as it will ever be.” Anaideia, nodding emotionlessly, gestured into the heart of shadow territory. “You may leave if you wish, or you may follow us to our clan. I do not care either way. Do as you please.” Intrigued by Styx's fascinated gaze, I wanted to see for myself what I had become. Stumbling over to the nearby spring, I gazed into the water to see my reflection. Crestfallen, I felt all hope of my previous life seeping away. My wings were patched up well enough, though they were stained with blood. I could see the bone through my hind leg, creating a grisly picture whenever I walked. The worst was my head. Skin hung down in rags, my once handsome face tarnished forever. I knew I had nowhere else to go. No one would accept me like this. No one except for these two strange dragonesses. I doubted whether anyone would allow someone like me into their clan, but I had no choice. With one final glance at the water I trailed behind them as they made their way deep into the woods. There would be no going back now. I was no longer who I once was. I was something much worse. |
Steely honour and blind trust is never a good combination. Blood-soaked bandages, a small pot of healing balm, and a face that is more scar tissue than scales.
Zeal, desperation, and resentment rings hollow in a chest scarred with the ravages of war where anger should be, but a heart, still forgiving and still beating, wards it off.
Keep trust close and betrayal closer, for till your allies abandon you, you will never understand true fear.
